Brief Descriptions of Each Retailer

Before we dive into a detailed comparison, let’s familiarize ourselves with both retailers.

IKEA Canada

IKEA is a Swedish-based furniture company created in Almhult, a small forested town in Sweden, in 1943. The first IKEA to open up in North America was in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, in 1975.

Along with their mother company, Ingka, IKEA has worked with many brands worldwide to create sustainable, affordable, and environmentally-friendly furniture for many to enjoy.

According to their website, IKEA’s self-proclaimed vision is “to create a better everyday life for the many people by offering affordable, high-quality home furnishings and solutions, produced with care for people and the environment.”

IKEA has also grown an exceptionally successful online presence in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston

La-Z-Boy is an American company established in Michigan, United States, over 90 years ago

Although the company has American roots, the Ottawa and Kingston locations have been locally owned and operated by the Maxwell family since 2011.

La-Z Boy prides itself on its furniture quality, style, and comfortability, which is why one of its popular phrases is "style meets comfort."

La-Z-Boy’s primary specialty is living room furniture, but they also sell furniture for other rooms in the home, including the living room and bedroom. Additionally, La-Z-Boy also offers a wide variety of home accessories and decor.

Regarding an online platform, La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston has a website called stylemeetscomfort.ca. As previously mentioned, the website is a great resource for browsing the product selection, learning about furniture, and staying up-to-date with current sales.

With that being said, the Style Meets Comfort website is not an e-commerce platform, meaning you cannot purchase products through the website. Instead, you must visit one of four Ottawa or Kingston showrooms and buy products with one of the Design Consultants.

Living Room Furniture Selection

Both La-Z-Boy and IKEA carry a wide range of home furniture.

While you'll find primarily living room furnishings in La-Z-Boy stores, IKEA sells a variety of furniture and other household items. For this comparison article, we will focus on IKEA and La-Z-Boy’s selection of furniture for the living room.

IKEA Living Room Furniture Selection

While IKEA promotes an affordable place to get great-looking furniture, its website focuses on creating an aesthetically pleasing household.

IKEA has a very broad living room furniture selection, including chairs, sofas, sectionals, sofa beds, ottomans, occasional tables and storage units.

They only lack a recliner selection, for which La-Z-Boy has diverse models and options.

Regarding style, IKEA furniture is minimalistic and simple, featuring clean lines and a tidy appearance. In contrast, La-Z-Boy’s furniture has an elevated and mature style.

La-Z-Boy Living Room Furniture Selection

La-Z-Boy offers comfortable, quality, and stylish home furniture and decor.

That said, there is an emphasis on creating high-quality and comfortable sofas, sectionals, accent chairs and, of course, the well-known recliner.

La-Z-Boy furniture is offered in stationary, manual reclining, and power reclining. While all of these choices vary in price, it is up to you to decide which option is better for you.

Aside from upholstered living room furniture, La-Z-Boy also offers a range of occasional tables and storage units from the La-Z-Boy incorporated sub-divisions Hammary, American Drew, and Kincaid. This selection includes coffee tables, side tables, and entertainment units.

To complete a living room arrangement, you can also find an assortment of accessories and decor.

Where it is Made

Where furniture is made tells you a lot about a company. Let’s take a look at where La-Z-Boy and IKEA make their furniture items.

Where is IKEA Furniture Made?

IKEA is a global retailer that has a reach of almost 400 stores worldwide.

Because IKEA has a more international reach with its furniture, its factories are located in Asia and, you guessed it, Sweden

While IKEA manufactures its furniture in Asia and some parts of Europe, product design originates in Sweden, along with inspiration for product names.

Because Swedish furniture trends inspire furniture design, it’s likely IKEA furniture reflects the Hygge lifestyle that Scandinavians live by, which is making sure your home keeps a cozy and welcoming environment.

Where is La-Z-Boy Furniture Made?

First, it is important to highlight that La-Z-Boy manufactures all furniture sold at La-Z-Boy.

La-Z-Boy is a global manufacturer operating in North America, Asia, and Europe. La-Z-Boy’s products are primarily made in North America for North American markets, with their global headquarters in Monroe, Michigan

Our recliners, chairs, sofas, and sectionals that are sold in Ottawa and Kingston are mostly manufactured in Dayton, Tennessee

Customization Options

Custom furniture is growing in popularity for homeowners nowadays. When it comes to customization options, there is a lot to discuss between both La-Z-Boy and IKEA.

IKEA Customization Options

Aside from choosing different colour options for certain items, there is little customization included at IKEA. Customizations are minimal compared to the customization options you can find at La-Z-Boy.

Along with different colour options, customers may also choose different knobs or handles for cabinets, change the wooden legs of sofas and even change the shelves of a storage unit if requested. These requests, however, are not always guaranteed.

La-Z-Boy Customization Options

Similarly, upholstery furniture at La-Z-Boy is highly customizable.

With over 800 fabrics and leathers to choose from, there are many possibilities to make your furniture unique to your own personal style.

New call-to-action

Aside from upholstery customization, La-Z-Boy living room furniture is also customizable in wood finish, nailhead trim, and welt trim, depending on the chosen frame.

Further, reclining furniture items at La-Z-Boy have many available upgrades, such as power. With power, select models are available with additional upgrades, such as heat & massage, power lift options for recliners, and adjustable headrest & lumbar

Power furniture at La-Z-Boy requires control panels and remotes to use them. Check out this article to learn more about using our Control Panels & Remotes.

It is important to remember that all upgrades at La-Z Boy come at an additional cost.

Interior Design Services

Whether the living room furniture is customizable or not, interior design services can help ensure that the furniture style fits seamlessly into your home’s design.

IKEA Interior Design Services

Like La-Z-Boy, IKEA does offer interior design services. With IKEA’s Planning and Consultation Services, a representative will guide you, either online or in person, to help you decide which furniture will fit you best in your home.

These services can also help you determine what colours to add in a certain room and advise which colours go well with your selected furniture.

You can get inspired by using IKEA’s online planning tools, choose a need based on which room or furniture pieces you’re looking for, and book an appointment to talk to someone about your inquiries.

IKEA suggests that you come prepared with room measurements in hand and note down details of your room.

La-Z-Boy offers complimentary interior design services with any purchase.  La-Z Boy's interior designers will work with you one-on-one to provide personalized furniture and design recommendations.

Warranty

Whether you shop at La-Z-Boy or IKEA, there is no doubt that living room furniture is an investment. Both furniture retailers offer a warranty with the sale of their products to help protect your investment.

IKEA Warranty

At IKEA Canada, each product has a specified warranty. Most products have a standard manufacturer’s warranty of 1-2 years, but some more expensive products can have warranties lasting up to 5 years.

Should there be a problem within the allotted time of owning your furniture, IKEA will determine if it falls under their warranty and replace it with the same product or recommend a similar product. IKEA also constitutes what is considered an appropriate replacement.

IKEA’s warranty does not apply to products that have been misused, abused, put together incorrectly, accidentally damaged, or cleaned using the wrong cleaning materials. Further, the warranty does cover natural wear & tear and item defects.

La-Z-Boy Warranty

The quality of La-Z-Boy’s furniture is known to last as a long-term investment.

If anything happens to your La-Z-Boy furniture, products carry a manufacturing warranty covering damage caused by manufacturing error or workmanship.

The mechanical and frame parts are covered for a lifetime, while others are covered for 1-3 years. This warranty is applicable across all upholstery categories consistently.

Take a look at the article Are La-Z-Boy Recliners Guaranteed for Life for a detailed breakdown of the recliner warranty at La-Z-Boy.

At an additional cost, La-Z Boy also offers an extended protection plan that covers up to five years of accidental damage. Depending on the product, the cost of this warranty is relative.

Doorstep delivery is also available, which is ideal for smaller items that are easily carriable. These items include small tables, chairs, and other accessories. This type of delivery usually costs about $39, depending on location.

For parcel and doorstep delivery, there is a contactless delivery option available. You can specify where to leave the item(s) when filling out your delivery information.

Lastly, in-home delivery is offered for larger furniture items requiring assistance to carry into a home or apartment. In-home deliveries tend to cost no more than $59 but can increase depending on location.
