But before a dining room can be filled with conversation and laughter, it must first be filled with furniture. So where to begin?

Dining Furniture Planning & Factors to Consider

As previously mentioned, there are many important factors to consider when planning a dining room furniture arrangement.

While you may be inspired by model dining room arrangements found in department stores or on your Pinterest board, what works for one household does not work for another.

Consider the following factors in order to create a dining room furniture arrangement that is tailored to your unique needs and preferences.

What Furniture Goes in a Dining Room

First and foremost, consider what furniture will go in your dining room.

Traditionally, a dining room has a dining table, dining chairs, and perhaps a dining bench. Further, many dining rooms have a buffet or side table.

When it comes to accessories, many homeowners incorporate a bar cart, area rug, window coverings, and artwork into their dining room furniture arrangement.

What furniture do you plan on putting in your dining room?

Dining Space

Before you even begin looking for dining room furniture, first consider your space and room layout.

The space you have chosen to be a dining room will significantly impact the size and shape of the furniture you choose.

What is the size of the space you are working with? What is the shape of the space?

Is this space an extension of your kitchen? Is this an open-concept space or an isolated room?

Now that you have a conceptualized idea of your space, it is a good idea to record the specific measurements of your dining room.

Measurements will be a helpful tool to refer to as you begin selecting furniture because its size can be deceiving, especially when displayed in a large showroom. Room measurements will help ensure you introduce dining furniture with the proper scale and size to create the right room balance. For adequate room around a dining table, you need a minimum of 30–36 inches for clearance space, measured from the nearest obstruction, whether a wall, door, window, or furniture.

For detailed instructions, take a look at the article How to Measure a Room to Buy the Right Furniture.

Aside from the size and shape, consider the design elements of your space as well. Take note of the colour of the wall, the material of the floor, and the lighting. This will direct the style of your dining room furniture.

Dining Room Functionality

Next, consider functionality. The way you intend on using your dining room will impact the style, size, and quality of furniture you buy.

What will your dining room be used for?

Some dining rooms are used daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This type of dining room may be considered more casual and furnished as such. Alternatively, a dining room that is reserved for hosting special occasions may be considered formal, calling for more elegant, decorative, and expensive dining furniture.

Who will be using the dining room?

A family with young children and pets should choose dining furniture that is practical, durable, easy to clean, and replaceable if necessary. On the other hand, dining furniture meant for adults can be less practical and more decorative.

How many people will be using the dining room?

Finally, the number of family members or how many you wish to host during regular meals will determine the size of the dining table and the number of seats you will need.

Dining Design Style

The design style of your dining room is where your personality can shine through. Determining your preferred dining style will help you focus your search as your shop for dining furniture.

Begin by drawing inspiration from dining spaces you love. Consider restaurants you enjoy frequenting. Collect images from home magazines that pique your interest. Curate your own vision board on Pinterest. Take a look at the article Dining Table Style Ideas for Your Home

As you gather inspiration, try to identify your own design style. Does your vision align with one of these six dining furniture styles?

Six Common Dining Styles

  1. Farmhouse
  2. Modern
  3. Rustic
  4. Industrial
  5. Traditional
  6. Contemporary

With a specific style in mind, look for dining furniture that portrays this particular look. It is also a good idea to ensure that your chosen dining style matches or compliments your kitchen style.

Dining Furniture Budget

Dining room furniture is sold at a wide range of price points. In fact, the cost of dining furniture can significantly vary depending on the following factors:

  • Quality of Materials
  • Quality of Construction
  • Where it is Made
  • Size, Shape, and Design
  • Custom vs. Ready-Made
  • Individual Dining Pieces vs. Dining Set

In turn, it is possible to furnish a dining room on any budget. With that being said, it is crucial to determine a budget for dining room furniture based on what you can afford before you begin shopping. A detailed budget will ultimately guide many of your dining room furniture selections.

Dining Table

The dining table is the heart of any dining room. It is the centerpiece of the room, surrounded by all the other furniture.

In turn, the dining table should be the first piece of furniture you select when furnishing your dining room.

Given that the dining room will be the anchor of your dining room, there is much consideration that goes into selecting this core piece of furniture. Ultimately, the size, shape, style, and quality of your dining table will determine the characteristics of the rest of your dining room.

Colder_loft2_1-1

Size of Dining Table

First and foremost, you will need to decide on the size of the dining table you require.

Begin by reflecting on the size of your dining space. If you have a large, open-concept dining room, you should be looking for a large dining table to fill the space. In contrast, if you have a small apartment and only minimal space for a dining area, you should be looking for a small dining table.

Keep in mind that some dining tables are expandable. Dining tables extensions include either one or more removable middle leaves, built-in butterfly leaf, or two side wings that can temporarily make the table bigger. If you only need a small table the majority of the time but occasionally require extra space and seating, an expandable dining table is the most versatile option.

Also, consider the number of people in your household. If you have a large family or several roommates who enjoy sharing meals together, you will need a large table with room for multiple seats. Alternatively, if you live alone or with one significant other, a small table with a couple of seats will suffice.

Shape of Dining Table

With the required size in mind, consider what kind of table shape you desire.

In terms of practicality, the shape of the table should coordinate well with the size and shape of your dining room in order to fill the space well and achieve smooth traffic flow. When it comes to style, consider how the shape of a table may impact the design of your room.

If your room is rectangular, a rectangular table is fitting. Similarly, if your room is square, a square table would fit well. To create more visual interest, you may consider mixing shapes. For example, a round table can look fantastic in a square room.

It is also important to keep in mind that the shape of dining tables also varies in terms of their base. The base of a dining table either consists of legs, a pedestal, or trestles. Legs are often used for rectangular and square tables, while a pedestal base is placed at the center of small, round tables. Trestle supports are fixed at the edges of the table and connected by a parallel tabletop. The type of base impacts the available space for dining chairs and leg room.

Dining Table Style

The style of your dining room table is very important because it will set the tone for the rest of the room.

From traditional to rustic, to modern, there is an infinite amount of dining room table styles to choose from.

The style of a dining table is typically determined by the materials it is made from.

A large wooden table with detailed carvings portrays a traditional style. A marble or glass dining table appears more contemporary or modern. A metal dining table gives off an industrial look. A reclaimed wood table is rustic and achieves the farmhouse chic trend.

Quality of Dining Table

The quality of a dining room table is determined by the quality of materials used to make it, the level of skill in craftsmanship, and where it is made. These factors directly impact the overall look of the table, how long it will last, and most importantly, the cost.

Both low-quality and high-quality dining tables serve a purpose depending on how you intend to use your table and for how long ...

For someone who is on a budget, is furnishing their first apartment, has young children, or is looking for something temporary, a low-quality dining table is actually perfect.

Alternatively, if you are looking to invest in a family heirloom that is extremely durable, elegant, and decorative for formal occasions, you should be choosing from a high-quality selection of dining tables.

With this in mind, consider how you plan to use your dining table and let that determine how much you are willing to spend and the quality you seek.

Cost of a Dining Table

One of the most important considerations when purchasing a dining table is cost. In fact, the cost of a dining table is dependent on the considerations mentioned above, size, shape, style, and quality.

Generally speaking, a dining table can cost anywhere from $150 to $4,000 or more. Dining tables made of the finest materials can cost upwards of $30,000.

On a Budget

$150 to $1,500

As a least costly option, you may be able to find a lightly used dining room table.

Upwards of $150, you are likely to find smaller dining room tables at about 48” and under. These tables will likely be mass-produced and of lower quality. It is likely that a dining room table in this price range will have to be replaced within a few years.

Mid-Range

$1,500 to $4,000

A table at this price point is often good-quality, well-sized, and made of solid wood. They are also usually up-to-date with current home decor trends. Further, dining room tables in the mid-price range are often customizable in design.

Although these tables are well-crafted and of good quality, it may eventually require some repair or restoration depending on how long you intend on keeping it.

High-End

$4,000 and up

High-end dining room tables are made with the utmost quality and the finest materials.

Dining room tables in this price bracket are considered ‘designer’, made with solid and luxurious woods. These tables are typically hand-made and are often locally crafted. Sometimes these tables are even antique.

High-end tables are one-of-a-kind, and with this, they are usually customizable in wood finish, colour, base option, custom sizing, and materials..

If you decide to invest in a high-end table, it will last you through generations. These tables typically become a family heirloom.

Dining Seating (Chairs, Benches, & Stools)

Once you have chosen a dining table, the next step is to choose the appropriate dining seating.

With this, you have many choices!

The first and most obvious choice is a traditional dining chair. Instead, some may prefer a bench. Many homeowners like a combination of dining chairs and a bench along one side of the dining table. Alternatively, a high-top dining table calls for stool seating. Among all of these options, you also have the choice between upholstered, non-upholstered, or a combination of both.

Let’s dive into the considerations when selecting dining seating.

Dining Room Chairs

A dining room chair is the most traditional, and most common, approach to furnishing a dining room.

With that being said, there is a huge selection of dining chairs on the market and it can be difficult to narrow down what you are looking for.

mason1

As you shop around, consider the following …

Size of Dining Chair

The size of a dining chair is important as it must coordinate with the size of the dining table and allow clearance for knees.

The standard dining chair height is 18 inches and the dining table height is 30 inches. As a rule of thumb, there should be 12 inches between the top of the dining chair and the bottom of the table.

As you take measurements, be sure to take into account the apron of the dining table, if there is one.

Number of Dining Chairs

Once you have determined the appropriate height, you will need to determine the number of dining chairs that can fit around the table.

For personal space and comfort, leave 24 inches of room per chair. Calculate an extra 12 inches for each end of a rectangular table if you want to place seating at the head and foot of the table.

Typically, a dining seating arrangement has an even number of chairs. A 72-inch long table comfortably seats 6, a 96-inch table seats 8, and a 120-inch table seats 10.

Dining Chair Style

With the dining table being the centerpiece of the dining room, many homeowners choose to match the style of the dining chairs with the table. This offers a coordinated and put-together look.

Instead, you can create visual interest by mixing and matching. With one consistent tone or element, consider choosing dining chairs with a contrasting finish or material.

When it comes to wood, ensure that the finishes you incorporate share the same undertone. For more information, take a look at the article How to Mix and Match Wood Furniture.

Upholstered vs. Non-Upholstered Dining Chair

Between upholstered and non-upholstered dining chairs, each option has its own advantages and disadvantages.

A non-upholstered chair is typically more durable and easy to clean. If you have children who are prone to spills and crumby messes, non-upholstered chairs are a better choice.

Further, non-upholstered chairs are narrower and easier to fit around a smaller table.

In contrast, if you are seeking something comfortable and stylish, upholstered dining chairs are the way to go. Especially if you enjoy hosting or lingering after family meals, you will likely appreciate the added cushioning. Additionally, the colour, texture, or pattern of the upholstery can be used as a beautiful design element in your dining room.

If you choose upholstery, be sure to leave 7 inches of space between the side edge of the chair and the table.

Further, keep in mind that the fabric covering upholstered dining chairs will be subject to wear and tear over the years. Depending on the durability of the fabric and daily use, the chairs may need to be replaced or reupholstered down the road. Consider the Cost to Reupholster a Chair.

Head Chairs & Side Chairs

Finally, you can create layers and dimensions in your dining table arrangement by contrasting the head chairs from the side chairs.

On a rectangular or oval dining table, two head chairs highlight the beginning and end of the table. Side chairs fill the long, parallel sides of the table.

The head chairs should be heavier and more emphasized than the side chairs. It is common that head chairs are larger with arms and upholstery. The side chairs are often smaller and more simple in design.

Cost of a Dining Chair

Like a dining table, the cost of a dining chair is determined by the size, shape, style, and quality. Further, the number of chairs you require will increase the overall cost of the seating arrangement.

Depending on the factors mentioned above, the cost of a dining chair ranges from $20 to $2,000 or more.

On a Budget

$20 to $300

Dining chairs in this price range are typically lower quality. When it comes to style, chairs in this price range are very simple and minimalist.

As a lowest price option, you may find either used dining chairs or dining chairs made from inexpensive materials that you will likely have to assemble yourself.

Upwards of $100, you are likely to find basic dining chairs made of softwoods, plastic, rattan, or metal.

Chairs in this price range may be a great option if you intend on replacing the chairs within a few years. They may also be a great choice if you expect damage from children or pets.

Mid-Range

$300 to $600

Chairs within this price range are generally good-quality, sturdy, and made of solid hardwoods. They are more stylish and up-to-date with current home décor trends. This may include cushions and upholstery.

Although dining chairs in this price range are well-crafted and of good quality, they may require some repair, restoration, or reupholstery depending on how long you intend on keeping them.

High-End

$600 to $2,000 & Up

Dining chairs in this price bracket are considered ‘designer’, made with solid woods, often upholstered, and extremely stylish. Further, the design of dining chairs in this price range may be customizable in order to match your current home decor. This can include wood finish and colour which could differ between seat and the rest of the chair, a variety of fabric and leather cover options and nailhead trim.

Chairs upwards of $1,000 are typically hand-made and locally crafted. If you decide to invest in high-end dining chairs, they will likely last you through generations.

Dining Benches

Incorporating a dining bench into a dining seating arrangement is a great way to create contrast and save space.

ES_lieveedge_2 - 3A94C

Size & Shape of Dining Bench

Benches work in coordination with a rectangular table. It can be placed along both long sides of the table, or just one side, with chairs across from it.

Additionally, corner dining benches can create seating along one long side and one short side of a dining table, creating a cozy corner nook.

When it comes to choosing the height of a bench, follow the same rules as you would for a dining chair. Allow for 12 inches between the top of the bench and the bottom of the table.

In terms of length, the length of the bench should either be the same length as the dining table, or slightly shorter.

Space for Dining Bench

Dining benches are a great way to optimize space. If the bench is shorter than the length of a table with legs, it can easily be tucked under the table to create more space in the room.

Further, benches often allow for more seating than singular chairs, especially if you are squeezing smaller bodies onto the bench (i.e children).

Dining Bench Style

In general, benches are suitable for more casual dining spaces and are a great solution for kids.

With this being said, there are ways to dress up a bench to make it appear more formal. Consider choosing a bench with a backrest or upholstery to create a more luxurious look, not to mention comfort.

Dining Bench Cost

The cost of a dining bench ranges from $150 to $10,000 and up.

Ultimately, the cost of a dining bench is determined by the same factors as a dining table and dining chairs.

Dining Stools

If you have a high-top dining table, or your dining room has a home bar, stools are a casual, versatile, and stylish seating option.

92-059 92-069 92-029

Height of Dining Stool

Just like dining chairs and benches, the height of a dining stool must be coordinated with the height of the dining table. As a rule of thumb, a dining stool should be 10 inches shorter than the dining table, or bar. This allows room to sit comfortably with legs crossed.

Consider the following stool types and their appropriate heights ...

Stool Type

Stool Height (inches)

Surface Height (inches)

Bar Stool

29” - 32”

41” - 43”

Extra-Tall Bar Stool

33” - 36”

44” - 47”

Counter Stool

23” - 28”

35” - 37”

Table Stool

18” - 20”

28” - 30”

La-Z-Boy_bar_stool_heights_image

For more information, take a look at the article Guide to Choose the Right Stool Height.

Number of Dining Stools

The length of the dining table will indicate the number of stools that can comfortably fit around it.

People should be able to get in and out of their seats with ease. To do so, account for about 6 to 11 inches between each stool, as well as between the edge of the counter or wall.

Be sure to also take into account the width of the stool.

  • For stools 16 to 18 inches wide, leave at least 6 inches between each.
  • For stools 19 to 20 inches wide, maintain around 8 to 11 inches between each stool.
  • If the stool has a 16 to 18-inch width but has a swivel functionality, it is also recommended to leave 8 to 11 inches between the stools.

Dining Stool Style

As previously mentioned, dining stools create a more casual dining design. In fact, dining stools can resemble the ambiance of the barside of a restaurant.

With that being said, there are ways to dress up the look of a dining stool. Similar to a dining bench, a backrest and upholstery can go a long way in making a dining stool look elegant and formal.

Dining Stool Practicality

Keep in mind that dining stools are not ideal for small children as they may have difficulty getting in and out of the stools. Further, a small child sitting on a tall stool can prove to be a safety hazard.

If you have children or little ones often dine at your home, tall and wobbly stools may be a safety hazard. If you are considering stools for children use, stool stability is an important factor to consider as tipping can occur. Solid stool stability is often found in higher-quality stools with a reinforced bar for stepping.

Dining Stool Cost

The cost of a dining stool ranges from about $160 to $1,300 and up. In comparison to dining chairs and benches, dining stools can be a more affordable option.

Keep in mind that the number of stools you choose for a dining arrangement will impact the total cost.

If you are shopping for stools, check out the Top 7 Best Stores to Buy Bar Stools in Ottawa.

Dining Sets

Between a dining table, chairs, benches, and stools, the thought of coordinating so many pieces may feel overwhelming. Not everyone has an eye for design after all!

In order to avoid the headache of mixing and matching dining furniture, many homeowners opt for a pre-selected dining room furniture set. This is essentially a package of dining furniture that is meant to furnish an entire dining room with one cohesive style.

When it comes to choosing a dining room set, the considerations remain mostly the same as selecting individual dining pieces. It is important to be cognizant of choosing a dining set of the right size, shape, style, quality, and price.

700-760R-622-637-850

With that being said, purchasing a dining furniture set does come with some unique advantages and disadvantages ...

Advantages & Disadvantages of Purchasing a Dining Set

There is no question that purchasing a dining furniture set is convenient. It is a one-stop shop to get every piece of dining furniture at once.

Not to mention, for those who struggle with design and piecing together different pieces of furniture, purchasing a dining set is an easy way to create a cohesive and stylish look for a dining room.

Further, purchasing a dining set can prove to be budget-friendly. As a package deal, buying all pieces of dining furniture together is often less expensive than purchasing all individual pieces.

On the flip side, it is important to keep in mind that most dining sets are not customizable. By purchasing a pre-made dining set, there is an inability to tailor pick each item to suit your unique space, style, and lifestyle.

If you so choose, you still have the option to buy additional one-off chairs if you want a few extras to entertain guests.

Dining Set Cost

Depending on the furniture retailer, a dining furniture set costs anywhere from $250 to $10,000 or more. The cost is determined by the quality of furniture, the style, the number of items included in the set, and whether or not the dining set is customizable.

Buffets & Bar Carts

Once you have a fully functional dining room, with a dining table and dining seating, it is time to start accessorizing.

If your space and budget allow for it, adding a buffet or bar cart to your dining room furniture arrangement is a great way to enhance your dining experience.

Buffet / Sideboard

A buffet, also referred to as a sideboard, is a long, low piece of furniture that is usually placed in a dining room to store and display items. It can also be used as an extra surface for serving food.

In turn, a buffet is both a decorative and practical addition to a dining room.

inspired-06 Bpdf

As previously mentioned, a dining buffet is decorative. It can be used to enhance the design of your dining room. It can either match your dining set or it can be used as an accent piece in a contrasting style, colour, or material.

Further, if the buffet has glass shelving, it is a great place to display fine china that is a decoration in itself.

A dining buffet is also practical as it offers extra storage space. Use it to store extra dishes, cutlery, serving plates, and other occasional dining items. When hosting a Thanksgiving, Christmas, or dinner party, a buffet also provides a surface for serving delicious food and hors d’oeuvres .

Be sure to access the size and placement of a dining buffet in coordination with the rest of the dining furniture. The average depth of a buffet is 20” to 22” and the average length is 60”. First, ensure that you have enough space for a buffet and it does not impede traffic flow. Moreover,  the size of the sideboard should look well-proportioned in comparison to the dining table.

Cost of a Buffet

A buffet costs between $100 to $30,000 depending on the size, shape, style, and quality of the materials and craftsmanship.

After furnishing your dining room with the essentials, a dining table, and dining seating, access your budget to determine the amount you have left to spend on a dining buffet.

Bar Carts

Similar to a dining buffet, a bar cart is a decorative and functional piece for storing and displaying bar tools, glassware, and liquor.

How-Repurpose-Your-Changing-Table

A bar cart is not the most practical or necessary piece of dining furniture, but it can be a very fun addition if your budget and space allow for it.

Especially if members of your household enjoy the occasional beverage and cocktail culture, a bar cart is a creative way to turn ingredients into decorations. Not to mention, a bar cart is great for entertaining guests.

Cost of a Bar Cart

The cost of a bar cart can range drastically. Many homeowners get crafty by creating an affordable, DIY bar cart and spend next to nothing. On the contrary, it is possible to splurge on a bar cart that is elaborately designed and made from luxurious materials.

In turn, a bar cart can cost anywhere from $50 to $5,000. Be sure to also factor in the cost of accessories, such as bar tools, liquor, glassware, and other accessories to fill the cart.

Dining Room Decor & Accessories

Now it is time to have some fun! Incorporating decor and accessories is a great way to enhance your dining room and complete the design.

In order to create a beautifully decorated dining room, integrate an area rug, lighting fixtures, window coverings, and artwork.

Dining Room Area Rug

An area rug is a great way to define your dining space, although it is not essential to incorporate an area rug into your dining room design. In fact, whether or not an area rug belongs in a dining room is a heated debate in the world of home design.

Consider your lifestyle, space, budget, and style when deciding on placing an area rug in your dining room. If an area rug suits your preferences, it is important to select the perfect area rug for your room.

When it comes to a dining room, a bigger area rug is usually better. A dining room rug should have at least 24 inches of extra room on all sides of the dining room table. This allows guests enough space to pull out the dining chairs without tripping over the rug.

Consider the following size recommendations …

Dining Table Rug Size Chart-1

Further, be sure to match the rug to the shape of the room or the dining table. Echoing these shapes creates a pleasant feeling of structure and nicely frames the dining room.

Surya_Dining_Room_Rug_Sizes

It is also a good idea to choose an area rug made with easy-to-clean materials. Spills and crumbs are inevitable in a dining room. In this case, bulletproof materials, such as polyester or polypropylene, are a great choice.

Similarly, it is wise to select a flat weave or short pile rug as they are much easier to vacuum than a shaggy, thick, or fluffy area rug.

Finally, avoid white or light-coloured hues in choosing an area rug for your dining room. Light and pale colours show dirt, crumbs, and spills sooner than a deeper, rich area rug colour or pattern.

Area Rug Cost

The cost of an area rug drastically varies depending on its size, materials used, how it is made, style, and overall quality. After accessing your remaining budget, you can spend anywhere between $50 to over $4,000 on an area rug.

At La-Z-Boy, we offer Surya area rugs. Surya rugs come in all shapes, sizes, colours, patterns, and textures. The cost of Surya rugs falls within the mid to high-end price bracket, ranging from $300 to $5,000 and more.

Check out the Review of Surya Rugs to learn more.

Dining Lighting

Dining room lighting is essential. You have to be able to see the food you are eating after all!

With this, dining room lighting can also be used as a decorative element adding to the overall style of the room.

In fact, a dining room chandelier is often the main focal point or “pièce de résistance” in a dining area. From contemporary to traditional, there are many options and styles of chandeliers to suit your dining room. Ultimately, light over the dining table should reflect the table style and complement other furniture in the room.

Consider installing a dimmer switch to control the main light in the room. The dimmer allows you to turn it up to full wattage when you need to clean and set the dining area but dial it down to create an intimate ambiance.

Additionally, you can achieve accent lighting with cove lighting, accent scones, and lamps.

Lighting Cost

The cost of dining room lighting can greatly vary depending on your selection.

A dining room chandelier can cost anywhere from $50 and up. The size and materials used to make the chandelier play a significant role in determining the overall cost. A small chandelier might cost around $150 while an extra large, extravagant chandelier would cost around $230. With that being said, elaborate and detailed chandelier lighting could cost up to $700 or more.

Wall-mounted lights, such as cove lighting or accent scones, cost between $90 to $230.

Further, the cost of a lamp can vary depending on the quality of materials used. You may find a table lamp for as little as $30 going up to $150 or more. Floor lamps tend to be slightly more expensive, starting at around $50 and going up to about $200 or more.

Dining Room Window Coverings

If your dining room has windows, window coverings can be used to enhance the colours and textures in your dining room design. Practically speaking, window coverings also block harsh light and create a sense of privacy.

The drapes or blinds will first depend on the size and style of your dining room. If the window is small, elaborate window coverings or bold drapery can be used to enhance the window and make it a more significant element in the room. In contrast, a massive window may call for more subtle window coverings.

Be sure to coordinate the window coverings with the other prominent patterns in the room, perhaps found in the area rug or upholstered seating.

Cost of Window Coverings

The cost of window coverings depends on a variety of factors:

  • Type of Window Coverings: blinds, shades, drapes, etc.
  • Size of Window
  • Quality of Materials
  • Installation Cost
  • Generic vs. Custom

On average, dining room window coverings cost anywhere from $50-$700. On the low end, single-window installations can cost $50. Alternatively, a dining room with about eight large windows could cost up to $3,500 in window coverings.

Dining Room Artwork & Wall Decor

The artwork and wall decor in your dining room is the final touch. With a clear understanding of your wall measurements, fill this space with decor that reflects what you love.

There are many art display options to choose from for dining rooms …

  • A Large Painting or Piece of Artwork
  • A Gallery Wall: Multiple Paintings or Pieces of Artwork
  • A Large Mirror
  • Patterned Wallpaper
  • A Chalkboard
  • Family Photography

The rule of threes says that artwork and decor arranged in odd numbers appear more appealing and memorable than even-numbered groups. For more ideas, check out Tips on How to Hang Artwork Properly.

Cost of Dining Artwork

It is difficult to place a price range on artwork and wall decor given that everyone has different tastes. While one homeowner may appreciate a simple and affordable collage of family photographs, another may desire an expensive piece of artwork or detailed sculpture.

On the low end, dining room artwork, wall decor, and accessories may cost around $1,500. On the high-end, you can spend about $6,500 or more.
