La-Z-Boy Design Stories: A New Chapter (Amazing Transformation!)

 Est. Reading Time: 4 Mins

Located just east of Ottawa, Rockland, Ontario, is a quiet and growing community that many families call home. In 2021, long-time residents Ray and Colleen decided it was time to refresh their living spaces and create a home that reflected their next chapter in life.

With their children grown and out of the house, they were ready to update both their living room and basement recreation area. To help bring their vision to life, they turned to interior designer Magaly del Castillo and design consultant Cliff Norman from our La-Z-Boy Cyrville showroom.

What started as a furniture update quickly turned into a full redesign that gave both spaces a new sense of comfort, style, and personality.

About the Project

When Ray and Colleen first visited La-Z-Boy Cyrville, they were eager to create spaces that felt fresh and inviting. As empty nesters, they wanted furniture that would look beautiful, offer comfort, and make entertaining easy.

They met with Magaly, who guided them through the design process and helped narrow down the many options to fit their taste and lifestyle. “I wanted to make sure both rooms reflected who they are now,” Magaly explains. “They were ready for a more polished, comfortable space that still felt like home.”

The couple fell in love with the look and feel of La-Z-Boy’s leather furniture, which offered both comfort and easy maintenance. With two very different spaces to design, Magaly focused on creating individual identities for each while keeping the overall look of the home cohesive and inviting.

The Interior Design Process

Magaly began by rethinking the layout of the main living room. Her first step was to improve the flow of the space by repositioning the television to the opposite wall. This change allowed the sofa to become the main feature as guests entered the home, giving the room a better visual balance.

She wanted the design to highlight both comfort and elegance, using durable materials and timeless colours. Ray and Colleen preferred simple, classic lines, so Magaly worked to create a look that felt contemporary but warm.

In the basement recreation room, the goal was different. Magaly wanted to make it a cozy gathering space for family and friends. She divided the room into functional zones: a lounging area with a television and fireplace, a space for the pool table, and an area for exercise equipment.

“The challenge was making the basement feel like an extension of the upstairs,” Magaly says. “It needed to be practical, but it also had to have the same warmth and sense of style as the main floor.”

By coordinating fabrics, colours, and textures between the two spaces, Magaly created harmony while allowing each room to express its own purpose and personality.

Furniture & Accessories Chosen

For the living room, Magaly chose the Allen sofa and loveseats, which perfectly complemented the new layout. Their soft leather finish made them both elegant and easy to maintain. The neutral tones of the seating allowed her to bring in accent colours through pillows, throws, and décor.

To complete the room, she selected furniture pieces from the Jefferson Collection, including the entertainment console, cocktail table, and rectangular end tables. These pieces added function and balance to the space, blending clean design with rich wood tones. “The Jefferson tables were a great match,” Magaly says. “They grounded the room and gave it a touch of sophistication.”

The Primal area rug by Surya added an earthy foundation, featuring soft brick and gray tones on a cream background. “That rug tied everything together,” Magaly recalls. “It introduced warmth and texture that softened the leather furniture beautifully.”

Downstairs, the Greyson reclining set became the heart of the basement. Ray and Colleen loved its comfort and built-in power features, which made it perfect for relaxing. The loveseat and chair complemented the central sofa, creating a natural conversation area that faced the new stone fireplace.

A gray and teal Surya area rug helped define the seating zone and introduced a subtle pop of colour. The space was finished with the Franklin table set, accent lamps, and cozy textiles. These final touches helped the basement feel polished, inviting, and perfectly suited for family gatherings.

End Result

When the project was complete, Ray and Colleen’s home felt completely renewed. Both the living room and basement reflected a blend of comfort and sophistication while remaining true to their lifestyle.

“The furniture is higher end than other stores,” says Ray, “but what you get for it. The value, the quality, the whole experience was unmatched.”

Colleen agrees that the process was enjoyable and effortless. “Magaly came to our home and got a feel for what we liked. She helped us out, guided us through the process, and it was great. More than likely, she’ll be seeing us again whether she wants to or not.”

For Magaly, this project was just as rewarding. “Ray and Colleen were wonderful to work with,” she says. “They knew what they wanted but were open to exploring ideas. Seeing how happy they were with the final result made all the difference.”
