Navan Great Room Makeover

I was introduced to Debra and Doug at the La-Z-Boy showroom on Cyrville road by our design consultant Cliff Norman. They had fallen in love with the comfort of the Forum power reclining chair, however, they wanted to keep a more sophisticated and updated look in their great/living room.

We arranged for an in-home consultation so that I could better understand their style. Nothing gives more info than the actual space we will be working on with our clients.

 The Before

We walked in and were impressed by the open foyer to the great/living room. A step down offered a spectacular view of their property through the wall to wall windows and doors to the deck.  A fireplace on the right wall commanded the room. On the left an open space for formal dining, with an entry to the kitchen. The right side had the office and bedrooms. The sprawling open space required a more balanced approach. The architecture, as well as the rest of the rooms, classic yet relaxed, had to be part and parcel of the final concept.

Furniture and Accessories they chose for the space:

We decided on the Alexandria sofa in a textured neutral fabric and introduced the Forum chairs in leather. Debra likes a neutral colour palette, soft greys, and both blue and teal accents. She specifically likes the calming zen feeling those colours give. Still, the room feels both welcoming and timeless. We also included the Allegra chair. This occasional piece has the swivel option, so enjoying the fantastic view of their backyard is just a pivot away. We centered the sofa to the fireplace, for balance and symmetry. This is what is called by many, the WOW factor. Having two Forum chairs flanking the entrance to the room is key to add to the effect.

A larger area rug with the tones of our furniture pieces was also introduced. It works well with the rest of the serene flow and feel of the home. It has a classic yet updated scroll pattern, that is repeated in pillows, a throw, vases, and artwork. The key to making the eye travel easily throughout the room.

Deciding on the tables and lamps, artwork and accessories is key to the completion of the room. They add the finishing touches to provide a cohesive feel and appeal to the room. I equate room accessories to the shirt, tie, socks, belt, and shoes, of an Armani suit. So very important!

The After:

Allowing for traffic patterns balances the space and allows it to breathe.  It has become a ‘come hither/take time and relax’ place. An organic, to reflect the setting, yet classic finish!

All in all, the client’s living room was one of my favorite projects, and yet, I’ve never done the same room twice. I have the best job in the world. Exploring new possibilities and having the room come alive, with each additional piece.

Every room is always dictated by the client’s personal taste. We had great fun and a lovely start to another long relationship with both Debra and Doug. Thank you for being so welcoming and allowing Cliff & I the pleasure of making your great room come together beautifully.

The Client’s Reaction:

“In February we purchased a sofa from La-Z-boy Furniture on Cyrville Road. We were then offered the services of an interior designer at no extra charge. After one home and one store visit, an area rug, chairs, tables, lamps, and accessories were chosen. The end result captured the style, mood, and functionality that we were looking for – and perfectly matched the one piece of artwork that we opted to keep.  We were very pleased with the professionalism and efficiency of both the Interior Designer Magaly del Castillo and our salesperson Cliff Norman.”
