Est. Reading Time: 10 Mins

When you think of your perfect dining room, what does it look like?

Is it simple yet charming? Does it have fancy decorative finishings on the chairs and table legs? Or is it whimsical, without being too out-of-the-box?

Dining room design can take on many different looks depending on your style preferences, the furniture you choose, and the furniture retailer you shop with.

Canadel and IKEA are two notable furniture retailers, both offering a wide range of dining room furniture. With that aside, each retailer has something very unique to offer.

IKEA is known for its budget-friendly furniture selection that caters to all rooms in the home. In contrast, Canadel is dedicated to creating high-quality custom dining room furniture.

This article will provide an in-depth comparison of Canadel vs. IKEA. With a better idea of their key differences and similarities, you will be able to make a confident decision about which retailer is best for you!

Brief Description of Each Retailer

Before we dive into a detailed comparison, let’s familiarize ourselves with both retailers.

Canadel

Canadel is a Canadian furniture company that has been in business for over 30 years, specializing in making high-quality custom dining room furniture.

Much like La-Z-Boy, Canadel prides itself on selling high-quality furniture

In addition, they offer extensive customization options, made easier with the Canadel UDesign tool. This platform provides the online customer with over 9 million furniture combinations and options to choose from.

A fun fact about Canadel furniture is that it is part of our dining selection at La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston, with a flagship Canadel showroom attached to the La-Z-Boy Kanata showroom.

IKEA

IKEA is a Swedish-based furniture company created in Almhult, a forested small town in Sweden.

Along with their mother company, Ingka, IKEA has worked with many brands across the world, working to create sustainable, affordable, and environmentally-friendly furniture for many to enjoy.

Unlike Canadel, IKEA specializes not just in the dining room, but in all rooms of the house. Along with their furniture, they also sell appliances, household storage & knick-knacks, as well as decor that you can display in your house.

Dining Room Furniture Selection

Both Canadel and IKEA carry a wide range of home furniture to choose from.

While Canadel focuses solely on dining room furniture, IKEA sells a wide range of furniture and other household items. For the purposes of this comparison article, we will focus on IKEA’s dining room furniture selection.

Canadel Dining Room Furniture Selection

Canadel Dining Room FurnitureOffered at Canadel are six main collections of dining room furniture: Canadel Core, East Side, Gourmet, Downtown, Champlain, and Loft. Each collection offers a unique twist on traditional dining room sets, taking on stylish and eye-catching appearances.

Among these six collections, you will find a wide range of dining room tables, dining chairs, stools, benches, buffets, and kitchen islands

All dining furniture offered at Canadel is customizable, which will be discussed further within the Customization section of this article.

IKEA Dining Room Furniture Selection

While IKEA has itself as an affordable place to get great-looking furniture, its website seems to heavily focus on creating an aesthetically pleasing household.

IKEA has a very broad dining room furniture selection, including dining chairs, dining tables, dining sets, dining storage, bar furniture, stools & benches, and even chair cushions, table linens and kitchen/tableware.

Unlike Canadel, IKEA dining room furniture is not customizable. Canadel’s dining selection is considered broad, based on its customization options, but generally speaking, IKEA has a larger selection of dining room furniture items.

In terms of style, Canadel dining furniture has an elevated and mature style, portraying distressed and heirloom-esque features. You will see this in the quality of materials and detailed embellishments.

In contrast, the style of IKEA furniture is minimalistic and simple, featuring clean lines and a tidy appearance.

With that being said, the style of IKEA’s dining furniture is similar to dining pieces found in Canadel’s Gourmet and East Side collections. You can learn more about these two collections by reading their review articles.

Where it is Made

Where furniture is made tells you a lot about a company. Let’s take a look at where Canadel and IKEA make their furniture items.

Where is Canadel Furniture Made?

Canadel’s products are all built-to-order at its 6 production plants located in Louiseville, Quebec Canada. Each production plant, excluding the fifth plant, specializes in finished goods made under the Canadel brand.

In addition to the 6 production plants, Canadel also has two wood transformation plants in St. George de Beauce, Quebec.

Where is IKEA Furniture Made?

Because IKEA has a more international reach with its furniture, its factories are all located in Asia and, you guessed it, Sweden

While IKEA’s furniture is manufactured in Asia and some parts of Europe, all of their furniture is designed in Sweden, which is where their furniture names are inspired as well.

Customization Options

Custom dining room furniture is becoming a popular demand for homeowners nowadays. When it comes to customization options, there is a lot to discuss between both Canadel and IKEA.

Canadel Customization Options

Canadel has a vast choice of customization options. Customers have over 9 million customization options to choose from, including the size, shape, and height of a furniture piece, adding extensions to dining tables, choosing the back and arms for a chair, and much more!

New call-to-action

The UDesign tool is an application created by Canadel that allows the user to make these customizations to the furniture online without having to go in-store.

There is also a Signature Program which gives customers the opportunity to incorporate more specific customization through an online request form.

Through the Signature Program, you can also mix and match customization options from different furniture collections into one dining set, which is something the UDesign tool cannot do.

If the request is too specific of a demand, however, the request can be denied. Canadel manufacturers may not be able to complete orders if the request is not within their capabilities.

Canadel’s collections all vary in terms of different customization options, which you can learn way more about in our article Everything You Need to Know About Canadel Custom Dining Options.

Canadel Signature Program

IKEA Customization Options

Aside from choosing different colour options for certain items, there isn't much customization included at IKEA. Customizations are very minimal in comparison to the customization options you can find at Canadel.

Along with different colour options, customers may also choose different knobs or handles for cabinets, and even change the shelves of a storage unit if requested. These requests, however, are not always guaranteed.

Interior Design Services

Whether the dining furniture is customizable or not, interior design services can be helpful in ensuring that the style of dining room furniture fits seamlessly into the design of your home.

Canadel Interior Design Services

Canadel does not offer any interior design services independently from La-Z-Boy locations.

With that being said, given that La-Z-Boy does sell dining room furniture from Canadel, La-Z-Boy interior designers do have general knowledge of Canadel furniture.

In turn, they can provide complimentary interior design services to customers who are looking for custom dining room furniture from Canadel.

For more information, check out Interior Design at La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston: What to Expect.

IKEA Interior Design Services

Unlike Canadel, IKEA does offer interior design services. IKEA calls it “IKEA Planning,” where a representative will guide you, either online or in-person, to which furniture will best suit you in your home.

Customers can get inspired by using IKEA’s online planning tools, choose a need based on which room or furniture pieces you’re looking for, and book an appointment to talk to someone about your inquiries.

IKEA suggests that you come prepared with room measurements in hand and note down details of your room.

Cost

Canadel and IKEA vary significantly in terms of cost.

Canadel specializes in custom dining room furniture while IKEA takes a more generalized approach. This factor, along with the quality of materials and craftsmanship, impacts the overall cost of their products.

Here is where each retailer stands in their cost.

Canadel Cost

Generally speaking, dining furniture at Canadel falls within the mid to high price range on the market.

The cost of Canadel furniture can be attributed to a couple of factors: the quality of materials, level of craftsmanship, and customizability.

Canadel does not list its prices online. Instead, all prices are given to the customer after the customizations are finished.

The cost is dependent on the complexity of labour and the materials used for each specific order. Once the retailer knows what materials are used in the furniture pieces, then Canadel will provide a price quote.

IKEA Cost

As opposed to the high-quality dining room furniture seen at Canadel, there is a huge price difference when compared to IKEA’s dining room furniture.

IKEA is known for its low-priced furniture, meaning it isn’t a surprise for some that IKEA would be significantly less expensive than Canadel custom dining.

This is mostly because IKEA does not use high-quality materials to craft its furniture. Because of this, it is important to note that IKEA furniture may not last as long as Canadel dining furniture, so make sure to take that into consideration if you are wanting furniture that lasts a long time.

Warranty

Whether you shop at Canadel or IKEA, there is no doubt that dining room furniture is an investment.

Both furniture retailers offer a warranty with the sale of their products in order to help protect your investment.

Canadel Warranty

All Collections at Canadel are covered by Canadel’s 1-year warranty, which covers the repair or replacement of chair frames, tabletops, fabric tearings, or any unforeseen circumstances.

Given that each piece of furniture is quality-crafted and built to last, Canadel also offers an extended 5-year warranty plan at an additional cost.

This not only goes to further protect your purchase, but it is also transferable when you purchase new Canadel furniture if you are looking to replace old additions.

IKEA Warranty

At IKEA, each product has its own specified warranty. Most products have a 1-2 year warranty, but some products can have warranties that can last up to 5 years.

Should there be a problem within the allotted time of owning your furniture, IKEA will determine if it falls in their warranty and replace it with the same product or recommend a similar product. IKEA also constitutes what is considered an appropriate replacement.

IKEA’s warranty does not apply to products that have been misused, abused, put together incorrectly, accidentally damaged, or cleaned using the wrong cleaning materials. Further, the warranty does cover natural wear & tear and item defects.

Delivery

Canadel and IKEA both have different delivery services available for an additional cost. To learn more about these delivery fees, contact either retailer.

Canadel Delivery

What's interesting about Canadel is that it actually has a faster delivery time than any other custom dining room store.

Usually, custom furniture takes about 6-10 weeks to get delivered to someone's home. However, Canadel has a 4-6 week delivery time, on average.

This delivery time does not include furniture made with the Signature program, however, which adds an additional 6-10 weeks to the delivery time.

When it comes to delivery fees, Canadel is the same as La-Z-Boy. There is a $129 delivery fee for local locations and $169 for any out-of-town locations. This white glove delivery service includes set up, assembly and re-arranging furniture.

For an additional fee of $25 per furniture piece, we can assist with either moving out old furniture from different rooms or bringing it to the curb.  We offer the option to dispose of any old furniture in a local landfill at an extra charge of $50 / per furniture seat.

To learn more about delivery at La-Z-Boy, check out our delivery service page: La-Z-Boy Ottawa and Kingston Furniture Delivery Service.

IKEA Delivery

IKEA has three main delivery services that customers can choose between.

First, there is the parcel delivery option, used to send over smaller orders like decorative pieces, picture frames, hangers, etc. The parcel delivery has a starting price of $9.99 but is subject to increase depending on the weight of the item.

There is also doorstep delivery available, which is also ideal for smaller items that are easily carriable. This includes small tables, chairs, and other accessories. These types of deliveries usually cost about $39, depending on location.

For parcel and doorstep delivery, there is a contactless delivery option available. You can specify where to leave the item(s) when filling out your delivery information.

Lastly, in-home delivery is offered for larger furniture items that require assistance being carried into a home or apartment. In-home deliveries tend to cost no more than $59 but can increase depending on location.
