With just the touch of a button, you can enjoy multiple positions of reclining comfort and other optional functionalities. That is if you know which button to press. 

At La-Z-Boy, we are known for the invention of the recliner chair and the evolution of our innovative design. What was once a wood slate chair is now offered in power with appealing upgrades such as adjustable headrest & lumbar and heat & massage. 

While power furniture offers luxurious comfort, many of our clients at La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston have questions about how to operate their power furniture. Whether your power furniture is operated using a control panel, a tethered remote, or a wireless remote, there are many buttons to navigate.

This article will provide detailed information and instructions on how to operate the control panel and remotes, allowing you to enjoy the comforts of your power furniture with confidence!

La-Z-Boy Power Furniture & Types of Power Controls

Before we dive into detailed instruction, it is important to know which power control you are working with. 

At La-Z-Boy, we have a wide selection of recliners with a variety of capabilities. In turn, there are multiple modes of operation and power controls. The type of power control is dependent on the furniture model.

2-Button duo® Power Control

Functionality:

• Back Recline & Legrest Extension (utton to the front of the unit)
• Back Upright & Legrest Return (button to the rear of the unit)
• USB Charging Port

Power furniture from the La-Z-Boy duo collection is controlled by 2-buttons on the side of the frame. 

To recline back and lift the legrest, simply hold down the front button closest to the USB port. To sit upright and lower the legrest, hold down the back button. Releasing the button at any time will stop the motion and hold the current position.

The duo power furniture control panel has no available upgrade option.

One-Touch Operation *NEW FUNCTIONALITY

 Functionality:

• Fully Recline/Legrest Extension & Return with One Touch 
• USB Charging Port

Moving forward, legrest activation of power furniture from the duo collection just got simpler. Much like the easy operation of an automatic car window, duo owners can fully extend or return their sofa or chair legrest at the touch of a button.

This one-touch operation is very simple.  Just hold the button to the front of the unit for a half-second and the legrest operation will continue until it is fully extended. To stop the automatic motion at any time, touch either button. To return the unit to the upright and closed position, press and hold the back button for a half a second and let go. It’s that easy.

You can finely adjust the position of the legrest by quickly tapping either button. Pressing and releasing the buttons within a quarter of a second will not engage the automatic motion.

The new one-touch feature control uses about ⅕ of the electricity in standby mode compared to the previous version. Therefore, if you opt to upgrade to the battery pack, the one-touch feature will improve the overall battery life of the unit. This means less frequent charging!

4-Button Power Control

Functionality:

• Independent Adjustable Legrest (2-Buttons)
• Independent Adjustable Backrest (2-Buttons)
• USB Charging Port

La-Z-Boy power recliners, such as wall away and rocker recliners, feature a 4-button power control on the side of the frame. 

The front bottom button extends the footrest while the front top button reclines the backrest. The back bottom button closes the footrest while the back top button returns the backrest to an upright position. With this, the back and legrest have the ability to operate independently. 

To extend the legrest and recline at the same time, simply press both front buttons at once.

The 4-button control panel can be upgraded to a tethered hand control. The hand control allows for more effortless usage as you don’t have to reach over the side of your chair. Not to mention, the cord attached means you don’t have to worry about losing the hand control within the seat cushions.

The buttons on the tethered hand control are very similar to the buttons found on the mounted 4-button power control. The top 2 control the legrest movement while the bottom 2 control the backrest movement.

3-Button Toggle Switch

Functionality:

• Independent Adjustable Legrest (1 Toggle)
• Independent Adjustable Backrest (1 Toggle)
• Independent Adjustable Headrest (1 Toggle)
• Home (1-Button)
• 2 Memory Settings (2-Buttons)
• USB Charging Port

La-Z-Boy power furniture with the adjustable headrest feature has a 3-button toggle switch mounted to the side of the frame. Each toggle powers either the legrest, backrest, or adjustable headrest, which can all move independently. 

The toggle is a switch that can be pressed forward or backward to power specific movement on the furniture. At any time, let go of the toggle to claim a specific position. 

The front bottom toggle is used to adjust the legrest. Press and hold the toggle backwards to extend the legrest. Press and hold the toggle forward to close the legrest. 

The back bottom button toggle is used to adjust the backrest. Press and hold the button backward to recline back. Press and hold the toggle forward to return to a sitting position.

Finally, the top toggle is used to adjust the headrest. Press and hold the button forward to lift the headrest. Press and hold the button backward to return the headrest to its original position. 

Create Memory Settings

Additionally, the front of the panel beside the 3-button toggle switch features a home button and two memory buttons.

The two memory buttons labeled I and II are located on the top and bottom of the home button for, personal, effortless operation, and comfort. 

When you have found yourself in the most comfortable position, hold down either the Memory or Memory II button until it beeps. That is an indicator that your preferred position has been set. 

To access your preferred position, press and release the desired stored memory button (not holding for more than 2 seconds), and the recliner automatically moves to the stored setting.

Press and release the home button, and the chair automatically moves to its home position which is upright and closed.

4-Button Toggle Switch

Functionality: 

• Independent Adjustable Legrest (1 Toggle)
• Independent Adjustable Backrest (1 Toggle)
• Independent Adjustable Headrest (1 Toggle)
• Independent Adjustable Lumbar Support (1 Toggle)
• Home (1-Button)
• 2 Memory Settings (2-Buttons)
• USB Charging Port

La-Z-Boy power furniture with an adjustable headrest and lumbar support features a 4-button toggle switch mounted on the side of the frame. 

The toggles function exactly like the 3-button toggle switch mentioned above. The difference with this 4-button toggle is the extra toggle that powers the adjustable lumbar support. 

The front bottom toggle is used to adjust the lumbar support. Press and hold the toggle forward to increase the lumbar intensity. Press and hold the toggle backward to decrease the lumbar intensity. 

The 4-button toggle switch also features a home button and two memory buttons.

Wireless Remote Control

The 3-button and 4-button power toggle switches can be upgraded to a wireless remote control. 

Functionality:

Operate Wireless Remote

To recline and adjust your position, use the left button with arrows pointing up and down. To recline back, press the arrow pointing down. To sit up, press the arrow pointing up.

Similarly, the headrest and lumbar can be adjusted the same way. 

Further, the wireless remote also features memory buttons and the ability to set preferred positions of comfort. 

When you have found yourself in the most comfortable position, hold down either the Memory or Memory II button until it beeps. That is an indicator that your preferred position has been set. 

To access your preferred position, press and release the desired stored memory button (not holding for more than 2 seconds), and the recliner automatically moves to the stored setting.

Press and release the home button, and the chair automatically moves to its home position which is upright and closed.

Find Your Remote

The problem with wireless remotes is that they can be easy to lose track of. 

If you can’t find your remote, simply press the ‘find me’ button on the side of the chair. It will send a signal to the remote and cause the remote to flash with LED lights and create a beeping sound. 

Keep your eyes and ears peeled as you look for it.

Do Not Disturb

Have you ever sat on your TV remote and accidentally changed the channel? This can easily happen with your power furniture, except instead of changing the channel, you will change your position.

Once you have found a comfortable position that you intend on resting in for a while, switch on the ‘do not disturb’ button found on the side of the chair. While the chair is in ‘do not disturb’ mode, the connection between the remote and the unit is turned off. 

When you are ready to reposition, simply switch ‘do not disturb’ off and your remote should regain connection.

Sync Power Furniture to Wireless Remote

If your power furniture has lost connection to the wireless remote, there are a couple of steps to sync your power furniture to the wireless remote. 

First, ensure that the ‘do not disturb’ button on the side of your chair is switched off. You want to ensure that your chair is open to picking up the signal of the remote.

Next, take the batteries out of the remote and disconnect all power to the chair. You will find three batteries in the remote and three batteries in the power supply at the back of the chair. 

After you take out the batteries, disconnect the cord of the unit from the wall. 

Once you have taken out all batteries and disconnected the unit from the wall, wait 10 seconds for the system to reset. 

Now put the batteries back into the unit and the remote and plug the unit back into the wall. Next, press the ‘find me button’ on the side of the chair. This button has an icon that looks like an hourglass. 

Finally, you will need to press the reset button on the remote. To do so, open the compartment where the batteries are. Take a paper clip and use the paper clip to press the button below the batteries. Push and hold until you hear the click. 

You have now reset your remote. As a result, you will hear a series of three beeps that last five seconds. That is an indication that the pairing to your power furniture was successful. 

Heat & Massage Tethered Remote

The heat and massage feature on La-Z-Boy recliners targets the lumbar spine, otherwise known as the lower back. Even with this targeted function, you’ll feel the heat and vibration throughout the chair, just at a lower intensity.

Navigated by an attached remote control, the upgrade offers two massage duration times, three types of massages, two levels of heat, and three levels of intensity. 

When the unit is off, the buttons of the remote appear blue. As you select your preferences in length, massage, heat, and intensity, each choice is reflected by either a green, amber, or red on the remote.

Power Lift Chair Tethered Remote

La-Z-Boy power lift chairs are the perfect choice for those that need mobility assistance. At the touch of a button, our lift recliners let you comfortably relax and recline, then securely assist you from a sitting to a standing position.

La-Z-Boy offers four series of power lift chairs: bronze, silver, platinum, and gold. Each series of lift recliners offers different features, including seat scale, weight capacity, clearance from a wall, and options.

In turn, the tethered remote differs depending on the lift power series.

Bronze Series

The Bronze Luxury-Lift Power Recliner has a tethered remote with two buttons, a recline button, and lift button.

Coordinated Lift & Return

The top button, labeled LIFT, is used to lift the user to a standing position or return the chair to a seated position if reclined. When seated, press and hold the LIFT button to raise the chair to the standing position. When reclined, press and hold the LIFT button to return the chair’s back to the upright position and to close the legrest. Release the button to stop in any reclined position, or when fully upright. 

Coordinated Lower & Recline

The bottom button, labeled RECLINE, is used to lower or recline the chair. When the chair is in a fully lifted position, press and hold the RECLINE button to lower the chair to the seated position. In an upright seated position, press and hold the RECLINE button to recline back and raise the legrest. Release the button to stop in any reclined position, or when fully reclined.

Silver Series

The Silver Luxury-Lift Power Recliner has a tethered remote with two buttons and a toggle. 

The top and bottom ends of the large button function the same way as the bronze series remote individual buttons.  The top end is the upward motion for lifting the chair or returning the chair to a seated position if reclined.  While pushing the bottom portion of the button lowers the chair from a lifted position or reclines the chair back if in a seated position. 

If you prefer the feel of a toggle compared to a button, one is located on the back of the remote to control the chair's movement. 

Coordinated Lift & Return

When the chair is in the seated position, press and hold the toggle down towards the bottom, power cord end of the remote, to lift the chair for a standing position. Or wWhen reclined, press and hold the toggle down and hold to return the chair back to the upright seated position and close the legrest to the closed position.

Coordinated Lower & Recline

When in a fully lifted position, press and hold the toggle up towards the top of the remote, to lower the chair to a seated position. Or, when seated, press and hold the toggle up to recline the back and raise the legrest.

Platinum Series

The Platinum Luxury-Lift series not only has the ability to recline and lift but the back and leg rest can be adjusted independently. With this, the tethered remote is slightly more complex with two extra buttons, as compared to the Silver Series remote. 

Lift & Lower

The large LIFT and RECLINE button are identical to the Silver Series remote.  Simply press and hold the top of the button to return the chair to a seated position and lift the recliner for standing. Alternatively, press and hold the bottom of the button to lower the chair from the lifted position or reclining the chair and extending the legrest simultaneously. The additional two buttons are used to adjust the back and legrest independently.

Backrest

Press and hold the right side of the BACK button to recline back. Press and hold the left side of the BACK button to return to an upright position.

Legrest

Press and hold the right side of the LEGREST button to raise the legrest. Press and hold the left side of the legrest button to lower the legrest. 

Note: these buttons do not work while the recliner is in a lifted position.

Gold Series

Finally, the Gold Luxury-Lift series does it all. Similar to the Platinum series, it has the ability to lift and lower with an independent legrest and backrest. Additionally, the Gold Series features heat & massage.

With added functionality, comes added buttons. The tethered remote for the Gold Series has two more buttons to power the heat and massage. 

Heat Controls

Press and hold the right side of the HEAT button to activate the heat in the seat of the chair. Press once for low heat (an amber LED light will appear), twice for high heat (a red LED light will appear), and once more to turn the heat off (LED light unlit). 

To activate the heat in the back of the chair, repeat the same pattern on the left side of the HEAT button.

Massage Controls

Press the left side of the massage button to activate the back and seat massage. Press once for constant massage (green LED light), twice for wave massage (amber LED light), three times for pulse massage (red LED light), and four times to turn the massage off (LED light unlit). 

Press the right side of the massage button to set the massage intensity. Press once for low intensity (green LED light), twice for medium intensity (amber LED light), and three times for high intensity (red LED light).
