Power lift recliners are an essential solution for people with mobility challenges, muscle pain, or difficulty standing from a seated position. While La-Z-Boy lift recliners are built for comfort, safety, and long-term use, it is important to understand that occasional issues can arise over time.
By addressing these common lift recliner problems transparently, we aim to help current and future customers understand what to expect, why these issues occur, and how they can be resolved.
To guide this article, we collaborated with Storm Shields, Head Supervisor of La-Z-Boy’s Service Department, who shares insights based on real service requests and customer experiences across Ottawa, Gatineau, and Kingston.

Storm recalls hearing this concern often when working directly with customers. "When I was a design consultant, some customers were worried they could not afford the lift recliner they needed."
While lift recliners typically cost more upfront, they are designed to provide long-term mobility support, comfort, and independence, which many customers find invaluable.
Solution: The higher cost reflects the advanced technology and durability built into lift recliners. La-Z-Boy offers lift chairs in four tiers, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, as well as financing options through Flexiti to make ownership more accessible.

"This is the most common issue I hear about needing replacements," Storm explains, noting that frequent use can eventually lead to wear on motor components.
Although motor problems can be frustrating, they do not usually mean the entire chair needs to be replaced.
Solution: Most power mechanisms are covered under La-Z-Boy’s Limited Lifetime Warranty during the first three years, with additional protection available through the extended protection plan.
Replacement motors are available and typically cost between $100 and $300, depending on the model.
Storm notes that remote issues range from minor to complete failure."Sometimes it is just one button that stops working, and other times the entire remote needs replacing."
These problems are often simpler than they appear.
Solution: Start by checking the batteries. If the issue continues, replacement remotes are available and often covered under extended protection plans. La-Z-Boy service teams can also help diagnose whether the issue is remote-related or mechanical.

Lift recliners experience more fabric wear than stationary furniture due to constant motion and frequent daily use. Friction between cushions, repeated contact on arms and legrests, and exposure to spills or accidents can all contribute to visible wear over time.
"Because lift chairs are motion furniture pieces, upholstery wear happens naturally as the material moves and rubs against itself," Storm explains.
This is especially common in households where lift recliners are used multiple times a day.
Solution: Choosing specialty fabrics such as stain-resistant, antimicrobial, or pet-friendly options can significantly reduce wear. La-Z-Boy also offers fabric warranties and reupholstery options to extend the life of your lift recliner.
Although less common, some customers find that their lift recliner does not properly support their height. This may result in feet not resting flat on the floor or insufficient head and neck support while reclining.
Poor fit can lead to discomfort and reduce the effectiveness of the lift function, especially for users with unique body proportions.
Solution: A sit test before purchase helps ensure proper fit. La-Z-Boy design consultants assess seat height, depth, and back support to match the lift recliner to the user’s body for long-term comfort and safety.

A common misconception is that using a lift recliner leads to muscle weakness by encouraging dependency. This belief often causes hesitation among buyers considering a lift chair for themselves or a loved one.
In reality, lift recliners are designed to reduce strain, not eliminate movement.
Solution: Lift recliners help users stand safely without overexertion and are frequently recommended by doctors. They support independence while minimizing stress on joints and muscles, especially for those recovering from injury or managing chronic pain.
