October 26, 2022

Est. Reading Time: 10 Mins

Furniture comes in all different shapes and sizes. Depending on where you shop, there is a wide range of furniture options on the market.

More specifically, with so many furniture stores in the  Ottawa & Kingston area, it can be difficult to choose a furniture retailer that has the right furniture for you. This decision ultimately comes down to your furniture style, comfort preferences, and budget.

At La-Z-Boy, we are proud of the products and services that we offer, but we understand that we are not meant for everybody. With this, we don’t discount other local furniture retailers. Take EQ3, for example. They sell good quality, comfortable, stylish furniture that caters to different audiences.

It might sound familiar, doesn't it? This is why it is always important to look deeper and see what a retailer's core values are. You’d be surprised how different they are from one another.

This article will compare EQ3 and La-Z-Boy to see which furniture retailer might be right for you.

Brief Descriptions of Each Retailer

Before we get into the detailed comparison, let’s familiarize ourselves with both retailers.

EQ3

To begin, EQ3 is a local Ottawa furniture store. Currently situated in the bustling Byward Market, this furniture store allows you to take a break from the busy streets of downtown to look at its soothing modern furniture products.

EQ3 encourages collaboration between designers and customers alike to create the home of your dreams.

Founded in 2001 by Paul Tielmann, this company is under the same brand as Palliser Furniture, EQ3’s parent company.

La-Z-Boy Ottawa & Kingston

La-Z-Boy is an American company that was first established in Michigan,  United States, over 90 years ago

Although an American-born company, the Ottawa and Kingston locations have been locally owned and operated by the Maxwell family since 2011 and have been a successful branch of the furniture company since its inception.

La-Z Boy prides itself on its furniture quality, style, and comfortability, which is why one of its popular phrases is "style meets comfort."

La-Z-Boy’s primary specialty is living room furniture, but they also sell furniture for other rooms of the home, including the dining room and bedroom. Additionally, La-Z-Boy also offers a wide variety of home accessories and decor.

Living Room Furniture Selection

Both EQ3 and La-Z-Boy have a wide selection of furniture to choose from, all for different parts of the house.

Since both retailers emphasize their living room selection, for the purpose of this comparison article, we will strictly be focusing on living room furniture

EQ3 Living Room Furniture Selection

EQ3 has a similar selection of living room furniture as La-Z-Boy.

Along with their chairs, sectionals, sofas, ottomans, and stools, EQ3 sells living accessories like sideboards, occasional tables, and media units

The only thing this furniture seems to be lacking is a reclining furniture selection, which La-Z-Boy has plenty to choose from. EQ3 appears to have more of an emphasis on stationary furniture.

EQ3 also puts more emphasis on modern and contemporary styles of furniture. This contrasts La-Z-Boy, which has more traditional pieces of furniture overall.

La-Z-Boy Living Room Furniture Selection

La-Z-Boy offers comfortable, quality, and stylish home furniture and decor.

That said, there is an emphasis on creating high-quality and comfortable sofas, sectionals, and of course, the well-known recliner chair.

La-Z-Boy furniture is offered in stationary, manual reclining, and power reclining. While all of these choices vary in price, it is up to you to decide which option is better for you.

Aside from upholstered living room furniture, La-Z-Boy also offers a range of occasional tables from the La-Z-Boy incorporated sub-divisions Hammary, American Drew, and Kincaid. This selection includes coffee tables, side tables, and entertainment units.

To complete a living room arrangement, you can also find an assortment of accessories and decor.

Where It Is Made

Where a retailer’s furniture is made tells us a lot about the company. Let’s look at EQ3 and La-Z-Boy’s product origins to see what they say about each retailer.

Where is EQ3 Furniture Made?

EQ3 has a warehouse location in Ottawa close to Lancaster Rd, in the east end of the city. You can find the warehouse at Unit 120-2750 Sheffield, Dr

Although Ottawa’s brand of EQ3 is locally owned, EQ3’s headquarters are in Winnipeg, Manitoba. According to their website, product sketches and manufacturing all happen in the same building. This allows workers to distinguish and differentiate their products by name much easier and simpler.

EQ3 puts awareness on where your furniture is made, telling customers that most of their furniture is made in Canada.

Where is La-Z-Boy Furniture Made?

First, it is important to highlight that La-Z-Boy manufactures all furniture sold at La-Z-Boy.

La-Z-Boy is a global manufacturer operating in North America, Asia, and Europe. La-Z-Boy’s products are primarily made in North America for North American markets, with their global headquarters in Monroe, Michigan

Our recliners, chairs, sofas, and sectionals sold in Ottawa and Kingston are mostly manufactured in Dayton, Tennessee

Customization Options

Not everyone sells it, but custom furniture is becoming a popular demand for homeowners nowadays.

Regarding customization options, there is a lot to discuss between both EQ3 and La-Z-Boy.

EQ3 Customization Options

Given that they sell high-quality furniture, EQ3 does offer customization options. This is because EQ3 manufactures its own furniture products, making it easier for them to offer this service.

With this, they offer the ability to change the upholstery covers of furniture, as well as cushion density, seating sizes, and wood leg finish colour.

EQ3 also offers fabric swatch samples on their website, which can be requested thanks to their interior design services (more on that later).

La-Z-Boy Customization Options

Similarly, upholstery furniture at La-Z-Boy is highly customizable.

With over 800 fabrics and leathers to choose from, there are many possibilities to make your furniture unique to your own personal style.

New call-to-action

Aside from upholstery customization, La-Z-Boy living room furniture is also customizable in wood finish, nailhead trim, and welt trim, depending on the chosen frame.

Further, reclining furniture items at La-Z-Boy have many upgrades, such as the upgrade to power. With power, select models are available with even more additional upgrades, such as heat & massage, power lift options for recliners, and adjustable headrest & lumbar

Power furniture at La-Z-Boy requires control panels and remotes to use them. To learn more about using our Control Panels & Remotes, check out this article.

It is important to remember that all upgrades at La-Z Boy come at an additional cost.

EQ3 Interior Design Services

EQ3 says that they believe in sharing design and furniture knowledge with customers. With this, they offer free interior design services available to anyone interested. Customers can request a designer through in-person, online, or virtual appointments

EQ3’s design services offer a “holistic process”, meaning each designer takes the time to review all aspects of a room (furniture, colour palettes, lighting, decor, etc.) to see what can be done to bring a design vision to life.

Virtual appointments are a newer specialty due to the ever-changing COVID-19 pandemic. If people are uncomfortable or unable to access the store in person, customers can talk to interior designers through video chat.

La-Z-Boy Interior Design Services

In contrast, La-Z-Boy offers complimentary interior design services with any purchase.  La-Z Boy's interior designers will work with you one-on-one to offer personalized furniture and design recommendations.

In turn, they will create a complete room design based on your personal style and preferences. Moreover, you will receive a complete room mood board and a 3D model of your room design before finalizing your order.

You can either set up an appointment or book a virtual call to work with an interior designer.

Both furniture retailers offer a warranty with the sale of their products to help protect the long-term value of your investment.

EQ3 Warranty

EQ3 offers detailed warranties, depending on what kind of furniture products you’re getting.

From their selection, you can select a case goods warranty, which lasts up to 1 year, an upholstery warranty, which protects fabric furniture for up to 1 year, or leather furniture for up to 5 years.

These warranties protect your furniture from any accidental delivery damages or product defects you may come across. There is also a 25-year protection plan, which covers the furniture frames and spring systems on custom upholstery items

If these warranties don’t make you feel like your furniture is well protected, EQ3 also offers an extensive Smart5 furniture protection plan that is partnered with ZucoraHome

This protection plan offers the most protection over your furniture, covering accidental stains and damage coverage on select furniture items. These furniture items can vary from fabric, leather, faux leather, and more.

Plans normally start at $89.99 plus tax or $1.50 per month but can vary depending on how many items are covered under that plan.

The mechanical and frame parts are covered for a lifetime, while others are covered for 1-3 years. This warranty is applicable across all upholstery categories consistently.
