In the stunning yet charming town of Embrun, Ontario, new developments are currently awaiting prospective homeowners. Known for its small-town charm and modern open-concept homes, Magaly del Castillo, an interior designer from La-Z-Boy Cyrville, finds herself there again, this time with an astonishing design story.
Feeling overwhelmed in her new home, Danielle sought La-Z-Boy’s expertise to bring her vision to life. Having such an open space to play around with, it was hard for her to envision what she wanted to do with it.
With some guidance from Magaly, she gained a clearer idea of the relaxed, cozy getaway she wanted. So, how did Magaly bring Danielle’s living room to life? Let’s find out!

About the Project
Our story begins with a new house purchased in Embrun, Ontario. When Danielle first purchased the house, there wasn’t any furniture inside, and, with a huge space to work with, she felt overwhelmed with what to do with it.
“It was really hard to think of how the space would look, and I knew I needed some help to figure that out,” she says.
She knew what she wanted from her new living room: a cozy, relaxing spot to unwind after a long day at work. A space to possibly spend some quality time with her partner and two teenage boys. A warm, cozy space that she wouldn’t have to worry about for years to come.
The question remained: which store to go to? While Danielle explored other stores in town, she felt the support didn’t appeal to her. “I had tried a few stores before, but what I felt that was different was feeling welcomed into La-Z-Boy and not feeling like I was hounded,” she said. This is why she decided to work with the team at the Cyrville store.
After receiving, in her words, “excellent service” from sales consultant Abdullah Abdussamad and eventually being introduced to Magaly, the vision started to really take shape.
Before…

After…
The Interior Design Process
When Magaly first entered Danielle’s home, she was immediately taking note of how open the space was. “I knew she wanted to have a space that was especially cozy and different from the rest of the room, so I took advantage of the large space she had acquired,” she said.
While talking to her, she found out that Danielle is very family-oriented, wanting a space where she could make her family feel comfortable, while also having a place where she could take some time for herself and enjoy the space she owns.
This is how the idea of adding furniture to the dining room took form as well. Magaly saw the potential of putting well-crafted dining furniture from Canadel within the space, and Danielle was happy with this, too.
She also pitched the idea of adding a book nook area in the living room so she could have a dedicated space for herself. Not only would this give her a chance to make the space a bit more multifunctional, but it would also let her take advantage of the large windows in her living area.
Regarding the tone and colour palette, Magaly learned that Danielle isn’t too big on trends, but she does love dynamic colours. “She liked blue, so that’s why we went with that sort of same palette throughout the room, and followed through with that same sort of colour palette in the reading nook and the dining room,” she said.
While keeping the main accent colour a light baby blue, she made sure to add it to the lamps, the pillows, and even the dining chairs in the dining area. A light blue was chosen to keep the room's light and airy feel intact, enhanced by the large windows overlooking the gorgeous backyard.
“The colours chosen really made the space feel like a well transition from one spot to the other,” Magaly says.
Furniture & Accessories Chosen
Since Danielle emphasized the cozy, relaxed theme, Magaly felt it necessary to choose reclining furniture, a choice Danielle agreed with.
Magaly and Danielle eventually landed on the Trouper Sectional as the main spot for her living room. While not the typical dark faux-leather colour associated with this sectional, Magaly chose a lighter fabric to match the light and airy element that her space called for.
“She loved the chaise piece, and she also thought her boys would like it too,” Magaly said.

To help accent the space, Magaly also added two Finley Recliners in a grey colour with blue undertones. She felt that, since hosting was important to her, her guests (or her boys) could enjoy their own reclining comfort separate from the sectional.

Moving to the reading nook, because she liked the chaise on the sectional, she decided to add another solo chaise piece in this area. While the Cleo Chaise is now discontinued, Magaly managed to grab hers before it was completely off the floor.

“I also added a separate area rug from the living room’s area rug to help show the separation of these two spaces, and it really does make a difference,” she said.
Lastly, in the dining area, Magaly decided to add contemporary yet modern pieces from Canadel’s Downtown Collection. As mentioned before, she added blue accent colours to this space, which made it feel more cohesive and seamless.

End Result
After working with Magaly, Danielle feels like she’s living in her space differently than how she envisioned it initially. “How we’re living now is not how I envisioned it. I have two teenage boys who I thought were gonna spend most of their time in the basement, and not have as many movie nights, but it’s actually happening more often than before,” she said.
Danielle also felt like her vision was fully realized thanks to Magaly’s help. “I appreciated how the La-Z-Boy staff was very attentive with me and how much Magaly listened to my ideas,” she said.
Magaly is also proud of the work she did with Danielle, saying that Danielle was very descriptive and knew what she wanted in her home, which came naturally from their conversation.
Danielle hopes that Magaly’s next clients feel just as excited as she did working with Magaly. “I would recommend La-Z-Boy to someone who is looking for a change in their house and isn’t sure what to do with their space. It definitely is worth seeking expert advice.”
