Est. Reading Time: 9 Mins

When furnishing a living room, it is important to find out how many seats you want to include. Maybe you’re a bigger family that needs more than just a sofa. Or maybe you’re not looking for an extra seat but just want a place to kick your feet up.

Sectionals and recliers are a great addition to a living room, but if you don’t have the space for a bigger furniture piece, what will you do? Will you only settle for just a sofa and a chair? Fret not; there’s still a solution!

Consider purchasing an ottoman!

Zeina Badawi, an interior designer at La-Z-Boy Kanata, says, “Ottomans are not only good for extra seating, but they are great as legrests and storage as well.”

So, know that you know ottomans can be a great extra seating option for your living room, will it be able to fit into your budget? How much does an ottoman even cost?

This article will talk all about the cost of an ottoman, industry-wide and at La-Z-Boy.

Types of Ottomans

Before we get to the cost of an ottoman, let’s discuss what types of ottomans there are.

Zeina tells us, “One of the factors that determines the price of an ottoman is the type of ottoman.” at La-Z-Boy, for example, we have three different types of ottomans.

You can learn more about our Best-Selling Ottomans by checking out this article.

Large Ottomans

Large Ottoman

One of the more common ottomans that we sell at La-Z-Boy is large ottomans. These ottomans are big enough to double as a seating area for people and can be used as a footrest.

Zeina says, “These ottomans are usually more expensive than our other ottomans, mainly because they take more materials to be built.”

She also notes that not many ottomans on the market are built to double as a seating area. “Because you can use these as an extra chair in your living room, they will last longer than other ottomans on the market.”

Small Ottomans

Small Ottoman

In contrast, small ottomans are also available on the market and at La-Z-Boy. Since these ottomans are smaller, they cannot be used properly as a seat, so they are mostly used as a footrest or legrest.

Zeina says, “these smaller ottomans are used for people who don’t have recliners but still want to kick their feet up while they relax.”

These ottomans are also very useful when furnishing a small space. To learn more about the Cost to Furnish a Small Living Room, check out this article.

Multipurpose Ottomans

Ottoman w/ Storage

Lastly, another great addition to a small space is multipurpose ottomans. These ottomans are similar to large ottomans in size but can do so much more.

According to Zeina, some ottomans can be used as coffee tables. “All you have to do is flip the top cushion upside down and you’ll see there’s a flat wood surface to put your snacks and drinks on.”

Some of these ottomans can also be used to store items. “This is perfect for when you need more storage in your home,” says Zeina.

These ottomans are generally the same price as regular ottomans but can be more expensive, depending on the purpose.

Cost of an Ottoman

Generally speaking, the cost of a traditional ottoman can range anywhere from $400 - $700

Zeina says that different furniture stores will range in price, but this is the usual price of an “affordable ottoman.”

Cost of an Ottoman at La-Z-Boy

At La-Z-Boy, our furniture selection is high-quality, which is reflected in a more expensive price tag. This includes our selection of ottomans.

Ottomans at La-Z-Boy fall within the mid-high price range, with the least expensive starting at $800 and the most expensive at $1,500.

Factors that Affect the Cost of an Ottoman

With these cost ranges in mind, the cost of an ottoman depends on several factors, which are listed below.

Quality of Materials & Craftsmanship

As mentioned before, the cost of an ottoman is dependent on the quality of the materials and craftsmanship. Essentially, the better quality the ottoman, the more expensive it will be.

Although our furniture is considered more expensive, this does not mean that it is not a disadvantage. La-Z-Boy is meant to last a long time, meaning you’ll be saving money down the road if you choose to spend more initially.

Size & Shape of the Frame

The size and shape of an ottoman also affect its cost because it determines the number of materials required to make it.

“If an ottoman is smaller, it will cost less. If it is bigger, it will cost more. Plain and simple,” Zeina says.

The shape of an ottoman is also reflected in the cost. Much like dining tables, round-shaped ottomans will be less expensive since fewer materials are used overall in constructing the furniture item.

Customizations & Upgrades

Depending on the furniture retailer, some ottomans are customizable. Customizations tend to increase the overall cost.

At La-Z-Boy, for example, ottomans can be customized from the type of upholstery covering you choose, cushion density, the wood finish colour on the legs, and even the nailhead trim on some items.

With this, the price also depends on the number of customizations you want to add to your ottoman.

Upholstery Covers

La-Z-Boy has over 800 fabric covers to choose from, meaning you can truly make your ottoman as unique as you want.

Depending on the ottoman, some fabrics may be available due to the construction of the furniture item. Zeina says to talk to a design consultant to ensure an ottoman can come in a certain cover you have your eye on.

Some ottomans are offered in select fabric options, which are selected to complement the ottoman's frame and design. These select fabrics do not increase the price of your furniture piece. However, should you go beyond that selection, you will be subjected to additional fees.

Leather Covers

If you opt for leather, this will likely increase the cost of your ottoman. Although leather is a more expensive option than fabric, leather tends to be extremely durable and long-lasting.

La-Z-Boy has a leather program, which includes various types of leather at different price points. If you customize your La-Z-Boy ottoman in leather, expect a cost increase of $200 - $850

Specialty Fabrics

In addition to the upholstery covers mentioned above, La-Z-Boy also offers specialty fabrics that offer unique features and benefits. The following specialty fabrics are available:

Stain Resistant Fabric: Innovative iClean Technology surrounds each fabric fibre, creating a barrier that repels spills before turning into stains.

Pet-Friendly Fabric: Tested and formulated to withstand the scratches and wear that a pet can cause to ensure a durable and easily washable fabric.

Antimicrobial Fabric: Antimicrobial properties surround each fibre to protect against mould, mildew, and odour-causing bacteria.

Performance: Superior stain and fade resistance properties make fabrics easy to clean and incredibly durable.

Eco-Friendly: Conserve Sustainable Fabrics are soft, durable and made from recycled water bottles.

Specialty fabrics typically have a price increase of $80-$1,000 for an ottoman, depending on the specialty fabric.

New call-to-action

Contrasting Welt Trim

Contrasting welt trim is a great way to add character and a different texture to your ottoman, but this addition does come at a cost. At La-Z-Boy, the price of adding a contrasting welt trim is an extra $150+ to the starting price of your ottoman.

Nailhead Trims

Nailhead trims are an excellent addition to an ottoman if you’re looking for extra accents on your furniture pieces, so they stand out. Zeina does mention that not all ottomans can have nailhead trims.

At La-Z-Boy, this extra bling on your furniture piece will cost an additional $100 to your ottoman’s starting price.

Wood Leg Finish

Some ottomans at La-Z-Boy have distinct decorative wood legs that complement the look of your chair. The standard wood finish at La-Z-Boy is brown mahogany, which does not increase the price of the furniture item.

With that being said, if you opt for alternative options like graphite, coffee, or driftwood, there will be an additional cost.

If you want a wood leg finish aside from the standard colour, an additional $70 will be added to the starting price of your ottoman.

Optional Casters

Lastly, Zeina mentions you can also add casters to your ottoman for quick and easy mobility.

Casters are wheels that go on the bottom of furniture items so they can easily be moved around without creating scuffs on your hardwood flooring.

It is important to note that not all ottomans at La-Z-Boy can have casters. If you are interested in this option for your ottoman, make sure to ask a design consultant in-store for ottomans that can have casters.

Similarly to the wood leg finish, the price of casters will add an additional $70 to the starting price of an ottoman.

1. Low Price Range - The Leo Ottoman ($899)

Leo Ottoman

Up first on our list is the popular Leo Ottoman.

This multi-purpose ottoman offers ample storage with a reversible top. One side has a tufted fabric, which provides additional seating, while the other side converts to a wooden cocktail table.

With wooden feet or casters, Leo is an affordable choice either alone or as a four-piece group!

The Leo is one of La-Z-Boy’s most popular ottomans available and a perfect example of an ottoman that can be doubled as an extra seat or a footrest, as described by Zeina.

She also says that the Leo can go well with a sectional because there is a tray at the bottom of the fabric side, which you can remove from the body and place on a cushion for easy snack and drink access.

2. Mid Price Range - The Roundabout Ottoman ($799)

Roundabout Ottoman

Next on our list is the Roundabout Ottoman. In case you couldn’t tell by its name, this ottoman is, in fact, round!

Designed to mix into a variety of décors, Roundabout is a versatile and fun addition to any room. Use it for a cocktail table or extra seating! With hidden casters, it can multi-function wherever it’s needed.

Further, the Roundabout is generously scaled and fashionably tailored with welted trim and a button-tufted top. Zeina says that this ottoman is a great choice for a mid-priced option at La-Z-Boy.

3. High Price Range - The Coronet Ottoman ($1,179)

Lastly, the Coronet Ottoman is one of the more expensive ottomans you can get at La-Z-Boy.

This ottoman can also mix into various home decors and is a great addition to a modern, contemporary, or transitional-themed room.

The unique part about this ottoman, according to Zeina, is the fact that it is one of the only ottomans at La-Z-Boy that has a customizable leg design. You can change the leg to have a more dressed-up style or keep it as a straight leg if you’re home decor matches that aesthetic.

Furniture Financing at La-Z-Boy

With all of these costs in mind, we understand that purchasing an ottoman at La-Z-Boy or anywhere else can be costly.

That is why there is a payment option called furniture financing. This allows customers to pay off the cost of their furniture item over time instead of paying the full cost at once. If you’re in a pinch with finances, this kind of payment option might be more beneficial for you.

The process of financing furniture is done through a third-party institution. At La-Z-Boy, for example, we partner with Flexiti Financing to provide furniture financing options for our clients.

Flexiti offers the benefits of instant approval and easy monthly payments. Once you have applied and been approved, you can shop and finance with Flexiti anytime.

Other financial institutions that other furniture retailers use are Fairstone and Paybright.
