What Sets La-Z-Boy Recliners Apart
First and foremost, the materials and construction used to make La-Z-Boy recliners is what sets our product apart from other recliners on the market … resulting in a higher price tag.
La-Z-Boy Materials & Construction
La-Z-Boy recliners are known for their comfort, but what makes them so comfortable? Comfort aside, how do La-Z-Boy recliners manage to last so long?
The comfort and longevity are because La-Z-Boy uses good-quality materials and unique construction methods that result in a very comfortable and durable chair.
These high-quality materials include anything from the reclining mechanism to the wooden framing and the foam padding used to create these recliners.
La-Z-Boy’s foam consists of contoured-cut polyurethane high-resilience foam, which is designed to easily bend and mould into a reclining shape. The foam used also includes a greater level of comfort, an extended lifespan, and a more sharp and full appearance.
The wood that La-Z-Boy uses is also unique in the sense that it is specifically designed for recliners. OSB is the primary wood material used and has many benefits, including superior strength, outperforming plywood, and no possibility of warping or separating.

La-Z-Boy also uses Premier Construction on our stationary and motion furniture line, which you can learn more about in this article.
Another reason why La-Z-Boy recliners are costly is that La-Z-Boy manufactures its own furniture items. This means that La-Z-Boy materials are independently made from our own materials, and La-Z-Boy products are not outsourced from other suppliers.
Finally, and most importantly, La-Z-Boy has also patented its own reclining mechanism specifically for La-Z-Boy furniture, which is why our recliners may feel and function differently than other recliners in the market.

7 Recliner Features Exclusive to La-Z-Boy
Building on the information above, listed below are 7 exclusive features of La-Z-Boy recliners,
- Independent Reclining Back: Allows the user to recline with the back of the chair and rock while in a seated position.
- Three-Position Locking Footrest: Locks into three unique positions, allowing the user to customize their comfort level.
- Double-Locking Footrest: Used as a safety feature so that the footrest does not drop abruptly.
- Adjustable Height Legrest: Allows the user to recline back into 16 different positions. Hearing each click of the chair tells the user they’re in a different position, and it can reach the point where your head and feet are at the same height.
- Hinged Seat & Back: The seat and back cushions are hinged together, meaning no gaps are in the furniture frame when you recline.
- Four-Sided Unibody Frame: All four sides of the chair frame are connected so that stress and pressure placed on the recliner are evenly distributed.
- Adjustable Reclining Tension: Based on your weight and strength, users can adjust the reclining tension by loosening or tightening the wingnuts underneath the frame.

More Factors That Affect the Cost of a La-Z-Boy Recliner
Now that you are aware of what goes into the quality materials and methods of construction, what are the other factors that affect the cost of La-Z-Boy recliners?
There are many additional factors, including the type of recliner, upholstery cover and added upgrades that contribute to the final price tag.
Types of Recliners at La-Z-Boy
First, let’s take a look at some of the types of recliners below. The type of La-Z-Boy recliner and its functionality will affect the final cost.

Rocking recliners provide a smooth and graceful rocking motion when not in a reclined position. These recliners are some of the less expensive options offered at La-Z-Boy.
Wall recliners hug the wall, allowing minimal space between the wall and the recliner to fully recline. Most recliners need at least 9” of distance to fully recline but a wall recliner only needs 6” of space, which can make a difference if you live in a Small Space.
Wall Recliners will be more expensive than rocking recliners due to the different reclining mechanisms needed to make this recliner. You can learn more about the comparison between Rocking Recliners vs. Wall Recliners with this article.
Similar to Rocking Recliners, Gliding Recliners also move in a smooth and graceful motion while not in a reclined position. Instead of rocking in an arch formation like the rocking recliner, a gliding recliner glides in a straight line. They are also similar in price compared to rocking recliners.
Gliding recliners are not to be confused with swivel chairs at La-Z-Boy. You can learn more about the difference between Swivel Chairs and Gliding Chairs by reading this article.
High-Leg Reclining Chairs are another unique reclining chair because they appear as stationary chairs but have the secret ability to recline. Simply push back on the arms of the chair to enjoy two reclining positions.
Depending on the frame, High-Leg Recliners at La-Z-Boy are less expensive than other recliners. This is because they are minimalistic in their design and appearance.

The Duo Collection is similar to our High-Leg Recliners. These furniture pieces look stationary, but, in reality, they are recliners as well.
The Duo collection recliners are all power recliners. This means that they are all more expensive since they have an automatic feature and, therefore, a more complex mechanism.
Power Lift Recliner Upgrade
Lift Recliners feature a handheld remote that allows you to sit, stand, or fully recline at the touch of a button. Power lift recliners also feature a power tilt and independent back and legrest motion.
Lift recliners are one of the most cost-heavy recliners at La-Z-Boy due to their capabilities and their extra materials.

Options & Upgrades
Another factor that explains the high cost is the fact that La-Z-Boy recliners are completely customizable. Each option and upgrade will further increase the cost of a La-Z-Boy recliner.
Upholstery Covers at La-Z-Boy
Recliners at La-Z-Boy can either be covered in a fabric or leather cover. The chosen upholstery cover will affect the overall cost of the recliner chair, especially if you decide to upgrade to a specialty fabric which is listed below.
- Stain Resistant: Innovative iClean Technology surrounds each fabric fibre, creating a barrier that repels spills before turning into stains.
- Pet Friendly: Tested and formulated to withstand the scratches and wear that a pet can cause to ensure a durable and easily washable fabric.
- Antimicrobial Fabric: Antimicrobial properties surround each fibre to protect against mould, mildew and odour-causing bacteria.
- Performance: Superior stain and fade resistance properties make fabrics easy to clean and incredibly durable.
- Eco-Friendly: Conserve Sustainable Fabrics are soft, durable and made from recycled water bottles.
As for leather upholstery, any leather selection will increase the cost of your furniture.
La-Z-Boy also has a wide selection of leather, recycled leather, and specialty leather options, which you can learn more about in our Leather Selections article.
Recliner seat cushions can also be upgraded to include firmer cushioning, meaning over time, your furniture will remember your unique figure and enhance the comfort of your furniture.
The price increase for this upgrade is $150.
*Please note that reclining furniture purchased before January 2021 had the option to upgrade to airform™ cushions. This cushion includes a two-inch layer of premium quality memory foam added on top of the standard foam base within the seat, chaise, and leg rest of the unit.
Power With Adjustable Headrest & Lumbar Support
Adjust the headrest with a power tilt to cradle your head and neck for the perfect reclining experience. Adjustable lumbar support helps inflate the lower back area of the frame to help with any additional support.
The price increase for this upgrade is around $200-$400, depending on the furniture frame.
To learn more about the headrest & lumbar upgrade, check out the Review of La-Z-Boy Power Recliners with the Headrest & Lumbar Feature.
Heat & Massage Upgrade
Heat & massage includes two heat settings and three massage speeds. PowerReclineXR® is also included in this upgrade, which lets the user experience full reclining comfort in any position, thanks to an independently operating back and legrest.
The price increase for this upgrade is around $200-$400, depending on the furniture frame.
To learn more, check out a Review of the Heat & Massage Upgrade at La-Z-Boy.
Wood Leg Finish Options
With high-leg recliners and recliners from the Duo Collection, there is an option to customize the wooden leg finish colour.
It is important to note that some of the options may not be included in some furniture frames.
- Brown Mahogany (Base Price)
- Coffee (Additional Cost)

- Driftwood (Additional Cost)
The price increase for wood leg finishes other than Brown Mahogany will be $70.
