Sofas are a great place to lay down for a short nap, but after a while, you might feel a little uncomfortable. Maybe because the arms of the sofa are too stiff or because you don’t have quite enough room to sprawl out.
If only you were able to conveniently turn your sofa into a bed?! Oh wait, with a sofa bed, you can do exactly that! While a sofa bed may sound like the perfect solution, you may be wondering what a sofa bed costs?
At La-Z-Boy, we sell a wide variety of quality and comfortable upholstery furniture, including sofa beds. Whether you intend on purchasing a sofa bed from La-Z-Boy or not, we believe it is important to have an understanding of sofa bed costs before you make an investment.
Mary Lee Smyth, an interior designer at La-Z-Boy Kingston, says “sofa beds can range in price depending on a variety of factors including where you’re buying from.”
This article will answer your questions about the cost of a sofa bed, factors that affect these costs, and what you can expect to spend on a sofa bed at La-Z-Boy.

What is Considered a Sofa Bed? (And What is Not?)
Before we dive into the cost of a sofa bed, it is important to identify exactly what a sofa bed is.
According to Mary Lee, when people talk about a sofa bed, they are usually referring to a folded mattress that is pulled out from within the frame of the sofa.
Mary Lee is correct! A sofa bed sometimes referred to as a pull-out couch or sleeper sofa is a piece of furniture that resembles a sofa, but has the ability to transform into a bed by pulling out a mattress.
With that being said, there are several different pieces of furniture that get confused with a sofa bed, such as a flip foam sofa bed, a futon, or a murphy bed.
Flip Foam Sofa Bed
Mary Lee first talks about a flip-foam sofa bed, which is one of the more affordable and simpler furniture pieces one can have in their home. Flip-foam sofa beds usually have three pieces of foam attached to them, which then unfold from the shape of a sofa into a mattress.
The sofa also sits directly on the floor. “There’s no legs or any space underneath the sofa,” Mary Lee says. The way to convert it into its bed form is by pulling the top of the seat out and laying it flat on the ground.
Mary Lee informs us that these are normally found in kids’ rooms as an extra sleeping space for a sleepover.
Futon Sofa Bed
Another sofa bed option that is considered inexpensive, but more comfortable for adults, is a futon (also sometimes referred to as a click-clack sofa bed). These types of sofa beds look more like sofas than flip-foam sofa beds.
Futons have legs like a regular sofa and they convert into a bed shape by pulling the back seat toward you and then pushing it back when you hear the *klik* sound. You’ll eventually hear a *klak* sound when the back is fully flat and ready to lay on. This is why some people refer to them as click-clack sofa beds.
This sofa bed, unlike other sofa beds, requires you to lay down where the arm of the sofa is, which gives it enough room for two people to sleep on.
Mary Lee also wanted to honourably mention murphy beds that are becoming more popular in the unconventional sleeping market.
Murphy beds are beds that are stored within a cabinet or wall unit, that can be pulled out by lowering the top side of the wall. You can learn more about murphy beds by looking at our comparison article on Murphy Beds vs. Sofa Beds.
Pull-Out Sofa Bed
Finally, we have a pull-out sofa bed, which is what we will be discussing for the remainder of this article.
These sofa beds look like a sofa, but when you take off the seat cushions, you are able to pull out the mattress by pulling the visible strap that's tucked underneath.
Traditional sofa beds with a pull-out mattress come in the same sizes as regular bed frames: they can come as a twin sleeper, a full/double, a queen, or a king-size. King size sofas, according to Mary Lee are not as common as other sizes because they are too big to place in most living areas.
Keep in mind that these sofa bed mechanisms, though simple to use, do come with their own set of problems. To learn more about Problems with Sofa Beds, take a look at this article.

Factors that Affect the Cost of a Sofa Bed
With this wide cost range in mind, the cost of a sofa bed depends on a number of factors.
Where You Shop
First and foremost, the cost of a sofa bed will depend on which furniture retailer you shop with.
For example, if you were going to go to a store like Structube, you would be looking at more affordable prices. However, if you are looking at a spot like Home Societe, you would be shopping for higher-quality furniture pieces that are more expensive but very comfortable.
Quality of Materials & Craftsmanship
The cost of a sofa bed is also dependent on the quality of the materials and craftsmanship.
Ultimately, the better quality of the materials and craftsmanship, the higher the cost. With this being said, high-quality furniture typically has a great return on investment as it is known to be long-lasting.
At La-Z-Boy specifically, sofa beds are built with quality crafted materials that are made to last a long time. This, however, means that our sofa beds and other furniture items are often more expensive than other retailers.
You can learn more about this by reading our article Is La-Z-Boy Furniture Expensive?
Size & Shape of the Frame
The size and shape of a sofa bed also affect its cost because it determines the amount of materials required to make it.
Mary Lee states that twin sleep chairs will be less expensive because they require fewer materials to be made. However, full and queen sleep sofas tend to hover around the same prices. Their price will be more dependent on the style and customizations you choose.
Customizations & Upgrades
Speaking of customizations, the customizations and upgrades of a sofa bed are significant indicators of cost. This includes the upholstery cover, cushion density, wood leg finish, nailhead trim, and welt trim. Additionally, some retailers may offer a mattress upgrade.
Each of these customization options and upgrades will increase the overall cost.
At La-Z-Boy, all upholstery furniture is customizable, including sofa beds. Below, we will outline the sofa bed customizations at La-Z-Boy, and how they will affect the overall cost of a sofa bed.
La-Z-Boy has over 800 fabric covers to choose from, meaning you can truly make your sofa bed as unique as you want.
Some furniture frames come with a number of select fabric options, which do not increase the price of your furniture piece. However, should you go beyond that selection, you will be subjected to additional fees.
If you opt for leather, this will likely increase the cost of your sofa bed. Although leather is a more expensive option than fabric, leather tends to be extremely durable and long-lasting.
If you customize your sofa bed in leather, expect a cost increase of $500 - $1200.

In addition to the upholstery covers mentioned above, La-Z-Boy also offers specialty fabrics that offer unique features and benefits. The following specialty fabrics are available:
- Stain Resistant Fabric: Innovative iClean Technology surrounds each fabric fibre, creating a barrier that repels spills before turning into stains.
- Pet-Friendly Fabric: Tested and formulated to withstand the scratches and wear that a pet can cause to ensure a durable and easily washable fabric.
- Antimicrobial Fabric: Antimicrobial properties surround each fibre to protect against mould, mildew, and odour-causing bacteria.
- Performance: Superior stain and fade resistance properties make fabrics easy to clean and incredibly durable.
- Eco-Friendly: Conserve Sustainable Fabrics are soft, durable and made from recycled water bottles.
Upgrading to specialty fabric will increase the cost of your sofa bed by 25% - 30% of the starting price.
Contrasting Welt Trim
Contrasting welt trim is a great way to add character to your sofa bed, but this addition does come at a cost. The price of adding a contrasting welt trim at La-Z-Boy is an extra $100 to the starting price of your sofa bed.
Wood Leg Finish
Some sofa beds at La-Z-Boy have distinct decorative wood legs that complement the look of your chair. The main wood finish option that La-Z-Boy has for wood legs is brown mahogany, which does not change the price of the furniture item.
With that being said, if you opt for alternative options like graphite, coffee, or driftwood, there will be an additional cost.
If you want a wood leg finish aside from the standard colour, an additional $70 will be added to the starting price of your sofa bed.
Finally, La-Z-Boy clients have the option to upgrade the mattress in their sofa bed. These options are ComfortCore mattress, blow-up air mattress, or a firmer mattress.
The ComfortCore mattress will add an extra $200 to your regular sofa bed. The blow-up air mattress will add an extra $700 to the starting price. Lastly, the firmer mattress option will add an extra $900 to the starting price.
