What is a Sofa Bed? (And What is Not?)
Before we dive into the cost of a sofa bed, it is important to identify exactly what a sofa bed is.
According to Mary Lee, when people talk about a basic sofa bed, they are usually referring to a folded mattress that is pulled out from within the frame of the sofa.
Mary Lee is correct! A sofa bed sometimes referred to as a pull-out couch, a couch bed or sleeper sofa is a piece of furniture that resembles a sofa, but has the ability to transform into a bed by pulling out a mattress.
With that being said, there are several different pieces of furniture that get confused with a sofa bed, such as a flip foam sofa bed, a futon, or a Murphy bed.
Flip Foam Sofa Bed

Mary Lee first talks about a flip-foam sofa bed, which is one of the more affordable and simpler furniture pieces one can have in their home. Flip-foam sofa beds usually have three pieces of foam attached to them, which then unfold from the shape of a sofa into a mattress.
The sofa also sits directly on the floor. “There’s no legs or any space underneath the sofa,” Mary Lee says. The way to convert it into its bed form is by pulling the top of the seat out and laying it flat on the ground.
Mary Lee informs us that these are normally found in kids’ rooms as an extra sleeping space for a sleepover.
Futon Sofa Bed

Another sofa bed option that is considered inexpensive, but more comfortable for adults, is a futon (also sometimes referred to as a click-clack sofa bed). These types of sofa beds look more like sofas than flip-foam sofa beds.
Futons have legs like a regular sofa and they convert into a bed shape by pulling the back seat toward you and then pushing it back when you hear the *klik* sound. You’ll eventually hear a *klak* sound when the back is fully flat and ready to lay on. This is why some people refer to them as click-clack sofa beds.
This sofa bed, unlike other sofa beds, requires you to lay down where the arm of the sofa is, which gives it enough room for two people to sleep on.
Murphy Beds

Mary Lee also wanted to honourably mention Murphy beds that are becoming more popular in the unconventional sleeping market.

Pull-Out Sofa Bed
Finally, we have a pull-out sofa bed, which is what we will be discussing for the remainder of this article.
These sofa beds look like a sofa, but when you take off the seat cushions, you are able to pull out the mattress by pulling the visible strap that's tucked underneath.
Traditional sofa beds with a pull-out mattress come in the same sizes as regular bed frames: they can come as a twin sleeper, a full/double, a queen, or a king-size. King size sofas, according to Mary Lee are not as common as other sizes because they are too big to place in most living areas.

Generally speaking, the cost of a basic sofa bed can range anywhere from $1,800 - $5,000.

Contrasting Welt Trim
Contrasting welt trim is a great way to add character to your sofa bed, but this addition does come at a cost. The price of adding a contrasting welt trim at La-Z-Boy is an extra $150+ to the starting price of your sofa bed.
Wood Leg Finish
Some sofa beds at La-Z-Boy have distinct decorative wood legs that complement the look of your chair. The main wood finish option that La-Z-Boy has for wood legs is brown mahogany, which does not change the price of the furniture item.
With that being said, if you opt for alternative options like graphite, coffee, or driftwood, there will be an additional cost.
If you want a wood leg finish aside from the standard colour, an additional $70 will be added to the starting price of your sofa bed.
Mattress Selection
Finally, La-Z-Boy clients have the option to upgrade the mattress in their sofa bed. These options are ComfortCore mattress, blow-up air mattress, or a firmer mattress.
The ComfortCore mattress will add an extra $200 to your regular sofa bed. The blow-up air mattress will add an extra $700 to the starting price. Lastly, the firmer mattress option will add an extra $900 to the starting price.
